Mrs. Conkling was born at the family farm in Bayard, Nebraska, to Carl Joseph and Dollie Ellen (Speer) Lindahl on April 11, 1922. Mildred was baptized into the Christian Faith at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Bayard, and confirmed her Baptismal Faith at Fridhem Lutheran Church in Hordville, Nebraska. Conkling, 95, of Lincoln, Nebraska, passed away on Tuesday, September 5, 2017. Mrs. Conkling was born at the family farm in Bayard, Nebraska, to Carl Joseph and Dollie Ellen (Speer) Lindahl on April 11, 1922. Mildred was baptized into the Christian Faith at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Bayard, and confirmed her Baptismal Faith at Fridhem Lutheran Church in Hordville, Nebraska. She was an active member of the Lutheran Church all of her life. Mildred graduated from Hordville High School. She was granted a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Hastings College, and a Master of Education degree from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. She was a Public Elementary School Teacher for thirty eight years. Mrs Conkling spent an equal number of years or more teaching Christian Education to youth and adults within the church and community. She was an active member of the Thayer County Education Association, Crete Education Association, Nebraska State Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma and The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. Mildred was united in marriage on August 19, 1942 to George C. Conkling. Mildred’s family, both immediate and extended, have always been a vital part of her life. She was dearly loved and will be missed by: children, Ellen (Bruce, II) McCandless and Elizabeth (Dale) Grotelueschen; grandchildren, Mari Johnson, Stephen Shields, Kris Francois, Sarah Grotelueschen; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by: parents; husband, George C. Conkling; siblings, Lucille, Ivan, Leo and Louis Lindahl; sisters-in-law, Angie, Adelle and Elizabeth; son-in-law, Harry Shields, Jr. Funeral Services on Friday, September 8, 2017 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lincoln.
