Read More	OBITUARY Mildred "Sis" Wells 1916 – 2004 Mildred McKinnis was born March 18, 1916, in Uniontown, Bourbon County, Kansas, and left this life on October 4, 2004, at the age of 88 years, 6 months, and 16 days at the Morton County Hospital in Elkhart, Kansas. Mildred was known to most people as "Sis" during her early years and as "Millie" in her later years. "Sis" was the second oldest of five children of Jim and "Mamie" (Holt) McKinnis. Her brother just younger than her, James, died in 1920 and her older sister, Irene, died in 1921. Roy, her younger brother, lived to adulthood but was killed at the age of 24 in a night flight squadron training mission while serving his country in the United States Air Force in 1943. The baby of the family was her sister, Virgil Maude. "Sis" and Virgil have carried on as the lone survivors of this initial family since the death of their parents…Mamie in 1966 and Jim in 1979. Also preceding "Sis" in death were her great-granddaughter, Cassie Lea Wellen, in 1980, and son-in-law, Gordon Wellen, in 2001; Glen McCall, husband of niece, Karen, in 2002. "Sis" attended school in Stonington and Walsh, Colorado. She played basketball in high school and rumor has it that she never played a game without fouling out. She graduated from Walsh High School in the Class of 1934, then attended the University of Colorado for one year. On March 5, 1936, she married Edsel Griffin in Richfield, Kansas. Edsel also graduated from high school in "Sis's" class. His parents were John B. and Minnie Brown Griffin. Edsel built the Griffin Air Field at Walsh, which is still used today. He was the first one in Walsh to own an airplane and started the first flying school there. He died June 2, 1946, in a weather-related airplane crash east of Walsh. "Sis" and Edsel were the parents of one daughter, Carolea. She was seven years old at the time of her father's death. In 1948, "Sis" married Frederick Roy Wells from Campo, Colorado. Fred was a son of Bailey and Agnes (Schuchardt) Wells of Campo. Fred and "Sis" had one son, James Bailey Wells. Fred preceded her in death 1990.
