Description	:	James K. McKinnis (Jim) was the third child of nine born to Siegle and Effie May (Burris) McKinnis near Bridgeport, Missouri, March 7, 1889. Jim moved with his family to Fort Scott, Kansas, and later to a farm near Uniontown where he grew up. On September 18, 1913, Jim married Mary Catherine Holt (Mamie), duaghter of Samuel B. and Martha Jane (Tennyson) Holt. Mamie was born near Uniontown on January 5, 1891; she was the youngest of 11 children. On September 18, 1913, Jim married Mary Catherine Holt (Mamie), duaghter of Samuel B. and Martha Jane (Tennyson) Holt. Mamie was born near Uniontown on January 5, 1891; she was the youngest of 11 children. In 1916, Jim and Mamie moved from Uniontown to Stonington, Colorado, with two small children, Lois Irene and Mildred (Sis). James S. (1918) and Roy Holt (1920) were born in Stonington. Due to bad winters and much sickness, James died in the winter of 1920 of scarlet fever and Irene died in 1921 of whooping cough. Jim was working in the Colorado State Bank at Stonington, but the whole family returned to Uniontown for the winter of 1922. Due to the deaths of the two children the previous winters, Mamie did not want to remain in Colorado during the coming winter as they were expecting their fifth child, Virgil Maude, in February, 1922. When spring came, they returned to Stonington and lived in Baca County the rest of their lives. Jim continued in the banking business and was also engaged in farming and ranching until his retirement. In 1926, the railroad came to Baca County and the town of Walsh started. The bank, organized by Mamie's brothers and other relatives, was moved from Stonington to Walsh. Jim and Mamie lived in their house while it was being moved from Stonington to Walsh. The house was moved by horses pulling it on a flatbed trailor and it took one complete day to just get it around one corner on the old Stonington road. Jim and Mamie were very active in the building of the Walsh community. Jim served many years on the town council as mayor, school board member, the cemetery board, and was always involved when projects came along to help the community grow. Mamie was avery active in the Methodist Church and was a charter member of the Walsh Civic Club. She also helped in other organizations to benefit the community. Mamie was a Gold Star Mother as son Roy was killed while serving the United States Army in 1943. The Jim McKinnis family took every opportunity over the years to return to Bourbon County to visit friends and relatives. They were proud of their heritage and always looked forward to spending time with their families. In keeping with that tradition, their children and grandchildren return for family reunions and other get-togethers to keep their heritage alive. Their daughters are Mildred Wells, Elkhart, Kansas, and Virgil Harlan, Walsh, Colorado. Mamie died in April, 1966, after many years of failing health; Jim died in October 1979.
