Description	:	RAPID CITY - Mildred Roberta Burton Calhoon, 87, of Rapid City, died Friday, May 26, at her residence at Echo Ridge Assisted Living. She was born at Academy, SD, on August 10, 1918, to Robert and Ethyl Burton. She attended school in Academy and Platte, SD, where she developed an early love for music. She graduated from Yankton College in 1939 with a music and teaching degree. She married Robert Calhoon, whom she met at Yankton, on June 2, 1940. She taught school in Geddes, SD, for three years before moving to Rapid City in 1942.... Read More	RAPID CITY - Mildred Roberta Burton Calhoon, 87, of Rapid City, died Friday, May 26, at her residence at Echo Ridge Assisted Living. She was born at Academy, SD, on August 10, 1918, to Robert and Ethyl Burton. She attended school in Academy and Platte, SD, where she developed an early love for music. She graduated from Yankton College in 1939 with a music and teaching degree. She married Robert Calhoon, whom she met at Yankton, on June 2, 1940. She taught school in Geddes, SD, for three years before moving to Rapid City in 1942. There she began giving piano lessons, which she was to continue through the 1980s. She started directing the choir at the First Congregational Church in 1945 and continued directing for 34 years. As her boys got older, she began teaching at Rapid City Central High School. She taught Latin and English for 19 years, retiring in 1981. Mildred was very active in musical affairs. She served on the board of the Rapid City Concert Association; she started and directed the well-regarded Nine-Singers from 1957 to 1965; she directed many civic musical activities and she appeared often as a piano soloist and accompanist. In addition to directing the choir at the church Mildred also played in the handbell choir. She was also active in the church's women's groups, was a longtime member of AAUW and the Rapid City Regional Hospital Auxiliary. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Robert, in 1997. Survivors include 2 son's and their families. Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. on Monday June 12, at the First Congregational Church on Clark Street with Rev. Henry Bradshaw officiating. Private family inurnment will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. She asked that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to the Zona White Music Scholarship Fund.
