She passed away March 7, 1995, at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva at the age of 87. Her parents and relatives, though originally Nebraskans, had helped settle the new land. Mildred’s parents, Earl and Amoret Heath, were divorced when she was little more than a baby. The young mother and child returned to Nebraska where she found work in Table Rock. Their next move was to Burress, where Amoret found a job caring for the family of Harold Casburn. Their stay in Burress was only a moment in their long journey. Mr. Casburn married Mildred’s mother and they decided to move to a ranch east of Denver. Mildred loved the ranch, and often told stories of how hard ranch life was. She would ride their horses to the country school along with her stepsisters, Grace and Emily, and step-brother, Kenneth. Mildred enjoyed listening to the strangers talk of the hospitality offered to them by the Casburn family. She was sorry to leave when the decision was made to return to Nebraska. The move to Ulysses never seemed to really improve the conditions for the family, in spite of the fact the children were working for the farmers in the area and bringing in money. Mildred would tell about how hard it was for her and her half-sisters shocking wheat for days on end during the hot summer. She said that she was reprimanded for not jamming the bundles of wheat into the ground hard enough for them to stand in the strong summer wind. The thought of shocking brought her memories of the many times snakes and spiders sought refuge in the shade. Mildred moved to Geneva and loved with her stepsister, Grace and Fred Stofer, in a little home in the west part of town, across the street from where she lived the rest of her life. One day in 1926, Mildred, her friend, Art Sole, and the Stofers took a trip to Minneapolis, Kan., where Art and Mildred were married. Mildred and Art moved to the house on the next block that was beside a building he operated as a machine and repair shop for many years. They were blessed with four children; Ardyce, Harold, Keith and Sherrie. Mildred always loved to socialize. She would invite everyone from Art’s shop at dinner time and would always cook plenty. She also enjoyed card parties. The World War years brought a severe housing shortage to the area with the staffing of the Fairmont Air Base. The Sole family made many friends with the servicemen. Art’s health started to fail, causing him to be hospitalized. He died in 1947, leaving Mildred to continue to support herself and four young children. Mildred commuted to York where she worked in an egg breaking plant. She said that she never had enough strength in her arms to keep going all day. She also worked as a cook in various restaurants in Geneva and owned and operated a little café along Highway 81 called the Meridian Café, for some time. Her four children would pitch in after school until closing time. She finally sold the café and continued to work for others until her retirement. Her relentless quest to support her family left her drained from each day’s activity. Her children become very self-sufficient and resourceful because mom was always at work, from early morning until closing time. She probably never worked just a 40 hour week in her life. Mildred always enjoyed family events and was glad to have her four children live close to her in Geneva. She was extremely happy to have her cousin, Floyd, move in wither when he retired. They shared her home for 17 years until Floyd died in June of 1994. Mildred is survived by her sons, Harold and Keith; daughters, Ardyce Whiteley and Sherrie Andrews; half-sisters, Peggy Waltemade, Barbara Dailey and Roberta Braden; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and many friends and relatives. Funeral services were conducted from the Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva on March 9, with Rev. Wanda Bennett officiating. A taped selection of “Whispering Hope” was played during the service. Casket bearers were Joe Dailey, Justin Sole, Jeff Andrews, Craig Rippe, Alan Sole and John Braden. Interment was in the Geneva Public Cemetery. The Nebraska Signal March 15th, 1995 Sec. C page 2.
