Modine July 2, 1906 - December 26, 1998 Funeral services for Mildred Modine, 92, of Gregory, South Dakota, were held Wednesday morning at Kotrba Funeral Home in Gregory with Pastor Robert Simmons officiating. Burial was held at the Colome Cemetery in Colome, South Dakota. Mildred Wilhelmina Emma Wiegand was born July 2, 1906 at Scribner, Nebraska, the oldest of five children born to the family of William and Adela (Lohding) Wiegand. She grew up and attended rural school in the Dallas, South Dakota area. She was married to Julius Modine at Colome on March 24, 1923. They made their home in Burlington, Colorado and Herrick, South Dakota for a time and then returned to the Colome area. Mildred was a busy mother, raising their seven children and doing the custodial work at the bank. She always found time to follow her children, especially to their sporting events where she would cheer for them with great enthusiasm. She was also a member of the Colome American Legion Auxiliary, the Rebekah Lodge, loved to play cards, took tickets at the Colome dances and would not refuse an opportunity to go fishing. In later years Bingo would become a great source of enjoyment. Her husband Julius died in 1975 and Mildred then moved to the Senior Village in Gregory where she made her home until early this year when she entered the Rosebud Country Care Center. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two brothers, Leonard and Melvin. Surviving her are her seven children: Dale Modine and his wife Iva of Deerwood, Minnesota; Harold and his wife Phyllis Modine of Huron, South Dakota; Robert and his wife Phyllis Modine of Eureka, California; Donna and her husband Ken Drey of Gregory; LeRoy Modine of Eureka; Vern Modine and his wife Theresa of Lusk; and Shirley and her husband Tom Harder of Newcastle. Also surviving her are 21 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren; and two brothers Clarence and Roy Wiegand of Hermiston, Oregon, neices, nephews and other relatives.
