Died at the residence of his father, John Holt, Esq., near Uniontown, Kansas, on the 22 day of April, 1872, Mr. MILES A. HOLT, aged 27 years 6 months and 17 days. When the old are called away our short-sighted reason can, in some measure at least, appreciate the visitation, but when the young are suddenly removed from this life, our poor reason staggers at the severe dispensation, and our agonized hearts are reluctant to yield in submission to the will of Him "who doeth all things well." No mere words of panegyriccan do more than justice to the precious memory of the good and noble man who forms the subject of this sketch. He was gifted with a mind of more than ordinary strength and brilliancy, but it was not this alone that made him the idol of his sorrowing relatives and friends. It was the rare graces of the heart that threw a halo of beauty and loveliness over his character and drew to him the love and affection of all who knew him. He was by nature, mild and genial in his disposition--kind and affectionate to all; and to all of these shining qualities of the mind it is unspeakably consoling to remember that he added the graces of the Christian. Some time in the year 1865,he became a member of the M. E. Church and from that time forward constantly exemplified in his daily walk and conversation the beauty and reality of the profession he made. But now he is gone! He is missed from his church upon which he was a constant attendant. He is missed from the circle of his numerous friends and associates. He is missed from the hearth-stone of his afflicted parents, brothers and sisters and wife. But yet Miles is not dead. He still lives, and has only been taken and like a lovely flower, transplanted to bloom amid the felicities and joys of that upper and brighter world. S. Pleasant Ridge, Bourbon County, Kansas."
