And "Doc" and Helen take care of their customers with a smile and it is said the little bank at Uniontown has always been one of the safest in the country. But Mr. and Mrs. Holt do not know as yet whether their children will continue the tradition of the Holt family bankers. UPDATE: In 2013, descendants of the Uniontown State Bank is still owned and operated by members of the S. B. Holt family. ***** Samuel Bronson and Martha Jane Tennyson had three children who died young but their graves are still to be found. They are: John R. Holt, b. 13 Nov 1868, died 21 Aug 1870 William Thomas "Willie" Holt, b. 15 Feb 1873, died 28 Nov 1886 Unknown baby born about 1886. It is known from a Uniontown Herald newspaper article that William Thomas "Willie" Holt was buried in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. S. B. Holt of Uniontown Passed Away Saturday Night Helped Make History in Fort Scott. (From Monday's Daily.) Samuel B. Holt, aged 73 years, and one of the earliest settlers of this section of the state, passed away very suddenly Saturday evening (July 5) about 6:20 at his home in Uniontown, as the result of an illness with asthma with which he had been afflicted for years. Mr. Holt's condition had grown much worse in the past several weeks, and it is a remarkable fact that he had told a number of his friends that he could not live longer than the Fourth of July. However, as his condition only a few hours previous to his death did not seem to be grave, it was not suspected that his prediction was to prove true, and his death came as a sudden shock to his family. Mr. Holt left the house Saturday evening and had been gone about half an hour when he was found lying on the ground, having been stricken a few minutes before. He was immediately carried to the house, where death ensued a few moments later. There was probably no better known man in the county than Mr. Holt. He came here when a boy but ten years old and settled with his parents near Turkey creek. There was no such place as Fort Scott at that time, and the little hamlet of Turkey Creek was the largest place in this part of the state. After he became old enough to work for himself, Mr. Holt drove a freight wagon between Fort Scott and Leavenworth, using a pair of oxen. He became well known along the route and the people always used to look forward to the visit of the freight driver, for it meant provisions for them. Samuel Holt was born in Kentucky May 22, 1840. When he was but a small boy, his parents moved with him to Illinois and in 1850 moved to Turkey Creek, Kansas., which was just a short distance from Uniontown. Sam Holt grew up and prospered with the state. He never lost an opportunity, and while many thought him only a dreamer, he was busy scheming and planning means to make money. He was hard working as a young man, but after he became wealthy he dropped active work and began laying plans to obtain money. He never made a dishonest turn and there is not a man in the world who can accuse Sam Holt of ever being anything but straight. He increased his little savings until he became the wealthiest man in his part of the county, and president of the Uniontown bank. The life of Samuel Holt reads like a book. It was full of adventures in the early days when Kansas was new. He was in the militia at the time of the Marmaton massacre and he has had many exciting adventures while living here in the border trouble. Mr. Holt is survived by seven children, six boys and one girl. The sons are L. E. Holt, M. E. Holt, M. M. Holt of Uniontown; H. W. Holt of Fort Scott, R. B. Holt and B. E. Holt of Wheeler, Tex. The daughter is Miss Mamie Holt of Uniontown. He is also survived by one brother, Eliza [sic] (Elijah) Holt of Wheeler, Tex. The funeral services will be held tomorrow morning from the Methodist church of Uniontown. Rev. Brown and Rev. Whitlow will conduct the services. Interment will be made in the family lot at the Uniontown cemetery, beside the bodies of Mrs. Holt (Martha Jane Tennyson), who died in July, 1910,and a daughter, (Nova) who passed away in 1909. Mr. Holt was a charter member of the Odd Fellows and the A. O. W. lodges of Uniontown. The Odd Fellows will have charge of the funeral services. ***** NOTE: Family information had always said their were 11 children BUT on the 1910 US Census Martha Jane said there were 7 of 12 children living at the time. This is the only reference currently found about the 12th child. The 1886 estimated birth year is just an educated guess from the birth years of the other children.
