Smith, 86, of Port Townsend, Wash., died of heart failure Dec 10, 2000 in Port Townsend. He was born July 14 1914 in Chehalis to Oscar Daniel and Viola Bertha (Peacock) Smith. As a child he lived in Pawnee, Oklahoma before moving to Longview in 1931 when he bought a dairy farm in Kelso. He operated it until 1966, then worked as a longshoreman and truck driver before retiring in 1979. He loved to read. He married Shirley Catlin in Kelso in 1940. She died in 1986. He later married Betty Leaverton in Sunnyside, Wash. In 1987 and she died in 1997. Also preceding him in death were a son Michael; a brother, Ivan and two sisters, Iva and Mildred. He is survived by seven sons, Rod Smith of Grays River, Wash., Larry Smith of Kingwood, Texas, Tim Smith of Hillsboro, Ore., Dennis Smith of Kalama, Lynn Leaverton of Pomeroy, Wash., Ken Leaverton of Yuma, Ariz. , and Dick Leaverton of Sunnyside; two daughters, Susan Hay of Port Townsend and Carol Leaverton of British Columbia, Canada; four sisters, Maxine Harrah of Castle Rock, May Comer of Olympia, Clara Haley of Portland and Patricia Bayer of Estacada, Ore.; 20 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A private graveside service will be held this afternoon at Cowlitz View Memorial Gardens in Kelso with Pastor David Hodgin officiating. A memorial service will be held at a later date Arrangements are being provided by Kosec Funeral Home & Crematory in Port Townsend.
