He leaves behind his wife of 30 years, June Schauer, two siblings, eight children, 20 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren. Son of Anna and Albert Schauer, Milton was born September 29, 1926, in Medina, North Dakota. A child of the Great Depression, his family moved frequently, and Milton often spoke of the work but also of the little things: the occasional treat of an orange slice or the sweetness of a piece of chocolate — a taste he savored until the end. After graduating from Ashley High School in 1945, Milton served in the army as a paratrooper stationed in Japan. Upon his return, he attended business college in Fargo, ND, for two years where he met and married Marilyn Schroeder November 25, 1949. Marilyn died November 24, 1974. Together they had nine children. Faith, farming, and family were Milton’s focus. He farmed in the same community for all his adult years and was surrounded by supportive relatives and neighbors. When they were not working, family visits and bible studies were frequent. Though he couldn’t carry much of a tune, he valued the message of the old hymns, and every Sunday he traded in his work jeans and long-sleeved shirt for a suit and tie. His prayers, resonating with ‘thee’ and ‘thou,’ revealed his connection to the scriptures and his desire to seek God. In the 1980s, Milton, with roots still on the farm, ventured out in a number of ways. During these years, he served as a county commissioner for several terms and, in 1987, he married June Buchholz nee Miller. Together they were active members in the Ashley Baptist Church, where Milton served as a deacon for many years. They enjoyed playing endless rounds of Uno, Skip-Bo, and Rook with family and friends. They also traveled to Alaska and Germany, took several bus tours, and covered many miles to be in attendance at activities that come with grandchildren. Milton, even into his 80s, looked forward to farming, especially at harvest time, a time he felt closely connected to the land, both physically and spiritually. He never stopped looking toward the horizon at the skies, but now his labor is done, and his legacy, his good name, and love of the land lives on. Milton is survived by his wife, June, and eight children: daughter-in-law, Nora Schauer Fennimore, WI; Gary (Linda) Schauer, Ashley; Russell (Luci) Schauer, Kintyre; Lois (Jeff) Shelden, Lewistown, MT; Linda (Winston) Enyart, Bismarck; Dale (Linda) Schauer, Ashley; Duane (Darcy) Schauer, Williston; David Schauer, Ashley; Mary (Randy) Palmer, Bismarck; and two step-children Delbert (Vickie) Buchholz and Renee (Charles) Peterson. He is also survived by two siblings: Phyllis (Alan) Hansen and Stan (Junia) Schauer. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Marilyn, his sister Irene, and his son Curtis Schauer. Memorial donations may be made Wycliffe Bible Translators (Dean and Dawn Schauer) or charity of choice. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley has been entrusted with arrangements.
