Milton Joseph Maasjo was born June 2, 1919, at Norma Township, Barnes County, the son of Christian Rudolph and Emma (Torbenson) Maasjo. He was baptized and confirmed in Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Fingal. He attended the Langemo Grade School and graduated from Fingal High School in 1938. He spent a year in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Montana, and later worked at Lockheed Airplane Factory, San Diego, CA. He enlisted in the U.S. armed forces December 2, 1941, five days before the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was trained at several bases before he became an instructor at Chanute Field, Champaign, IL, before going overseas with the 15th Air Force. He obtained the rank of Master Sergeant and was discharged on September 28, 1945. He returned to Fingal and began farming with his brothers Randolph and Orvis in Norma Township. Milton married Virginia Nayes on June 11, 1950, at the Nayes farm home, Fingal. They farmed in Norma Township until 1955 when they purchased a farm in Binghampton Township near Fingal. They retired from farming in 1983 and moved into Fingal in 1985. Milton was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. He served on the church council, sang in the choir, and taught Sunday School for many years. He was supervisor and chairman of Binghampton Township. He was a member of the American Legion post 187 of Fingal serving as commander and as Chaplain for many years. He was a charter member of the Fingal Fire Protection District and served as Secretary-treasurer for 20 years. He was on the committee that helped to organize The National Sunflower Association. In October 1992 Milton and Virginia received the Outstanding Agriculturist Award, representing Barnes County at the North Dakota State University in Fargo. He was also a member of the Valley City Eagles club. Milton is survived by his wife, Virginia; two daughters Dawn (Ronald) Struxness, Naperville, IL, Elizabeth (Jimmy) Gay, Monroe, LA; a son Marlyn, Fingal; four grandchildren Michael Struxness, Seattle, WA, Meghan Struxness, Lisle, IL, Joseph Maasjo, Fingal, and Samantha Maasjo, Fingal; brother, Orvis, Enderlin, ND, and a sister, Edith (Rev. James) Brooks, Lawrenceville, GA; sisters-in-law Donna Maasjo, Fargo, and Edna Maasjo, Valley City, and numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, twin brother Clarence and brother Randolph, and daughter-in-law Gail Maasjo.
