He was the oldest man on the jury. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Boone County Democrat February 18, 1910 At 4:30 o’clock Friday morning, February 11th at his home 1115 West Fifth street, occurred the death of Milton Logan Sr. one of the most notable and historic of the aged residents of the city and a personal friend of the martyred president, Abraham Lincoln. He was in his ninety first year, but had always enjoyed fairly good health until about two months ago when he began to fail and for the past three weeks had been confined to his bed. He was nursed by his faithful wife and daughter, Mrs. W.H. Booth, and everything possible was done to make his last days comfortable and happy. Death was caused by the natural dissolution of the forces of life. He had performed his life work well, had run his course, and while he suffered some pain during the final illness, his death was peaceful and serene, falling gently asleep with a pleased expression on his face that was inspiring to behold. Milton Logan was born in Belmont county, Ohio, June 4th, 1819, making him 90 years, 7 months and 7 days old at the time of his death. His birth and death both occurring on Friday, and had he lived twenty four hours longer he would have passed away on the anniversary of the birth of his personal friend, Abraham Lincoln. Just a year ago when elaborate services were held in the Armory in honor of the birth of Lincoln, Mr. Logan was an honored guest and occupied the seat of honor on the platform. He grew to young manhood in his native state and then removed to Illinois and engaged in farming near Beardstown in that state. While there he became acquainted with and learned to love the great Lincoln. The story of the famous Armstrong murder case at Beardstown, in which Lincoln was attorney for the defendant, Armstrong, and won his case by refuting the evidence of the main witnesses for the state by the use of an almanac which showed that the moon was not shining on the night of the crime, these witnesses having sworn that they saw the occurrence plainly by the light of the moon. Mr. Logan was the foreman of that jury and the last surviving member. Mr. Logan was married to Miss Margaret Bowen at Beardstown, and she passed away there in 1873. To them were born five children, Edwin P. Logan now of Iola, Kansas, Charles Logan, who died at Blair, Nebraska, in 1882, Mrs. Emma Foster of Minneapolis, John Logan, who died at Alliance, Nebraska, in 1903, and Miss Ellen B. Logan, a noted musician and instructor of music in Monticello Seminary, Godfrey, Illinois. June 7, 1875, he was again married, this time to Miss Hannah Burleigh of Beardstown, and to them were born three children, Milton Logan Jr., a well known railroad engineer of this city, Guy C. Logan, now manager of a large elevator business at Atchison, Kansas, and Mrs. Alice booth of this city, wife of W.H. Booth, foreman of the Boone Blank Book Company. Mr. and Mrs. Logan came to Boone in April, 1877, and for a number of years he was engaged in the mercantile business with the well-known firm of Logan & Canfield, finally retiring from active life on account of advanced years. He served for four years as justice of the peace of Des Moines township and was twice elected mayor of Boonsboro, discharging the duties of both offices with credit to himself and to the satisfaction of his constituents. He was of a quiet and retiring disposition, a great lover of home and family, a loving and devoted husband and gather and a kind and sympathetic neighbor, enjoying the confidence and esteem of all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance, who extend sincere sympathy to the bereaved widow and children in their sorrow. He is also survived by two brother, O.H.P. Logan of this city and George W. Logan of Quennemo, Kansas. Seven brothers and one sister, Mrs. T.N. Canfield preceded him in death. The funeral services were held from the home at 2:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. H.F. Ritz of the Christian church and attended by a host of sorrowing relatives and friends. A quartet from the church composed of Mrs. Gertrude Dawdy and Misses Cecil Phelan, Mabel Standley and Alta Vestal, furnished the music, the selection being, “Rock of Ages,” “Jesus Lover of My Soul” and “ We are Going Down the Valley.” The pall bearers were, W.H. Burwell, Dan Davis, M.W. Griffe, Frank Ritter, Andrew Johnson and William Miles. Many beautiful floral tributes attested the loving esteem of his countless friends. The remains were laid tenderly to rest in East Linwood cemetery. The following from out of the city were present for the funeral: Guy C. Logan, a son, from Atchison, Kansas, George W. Burleigh and daughter, Virginia, of Des Moines, brother and niece of Mrs. Logan, and Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Schuneman of Newton, Kiowa, the latter a niece of Mr. Logan.
