Milton M. Schauer, son of Jacob J. and Maria (Lammle) Schauer was born May 10, 1928 on the family homestead northwest of Long Lake, SD. He started country school in this area and went on to attend Ashley High School, graduating with the class of 1946. He then attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa for one year and then returned to Ashley and worked as a teller at McIntosh County Bank from 1947-1951. He then entered the United States Army serving in Korea from January of 1951 to January of 1953 when he was honorably discharged. He returned to Ashley and McIntosh County Bank where he worked from 1953-1954. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Becker on June 14, 1953 in Zion Lutheran Church at Valley City, ND. They made their home in Ashley. In 1955, he and Eugene Bertsch purchased the Ashley Super Valu, operating that store until 1959. In March of 1961, he started working with the Agriculture Stabilization & Conservation Service as a county fieldman until 1970, then later receiving county executive director training. In 1971, he owned and operated Milt's Red Owl Store. He then became Executive Director of ASCS for 2 1/2 years in Ransom County, then in McIntosh County until his retirement on April 28, 1995 completing a 34 year career with the ASCS. Milton enjoyed reading and watching television. When he was younger, he liked flying; he was also a hobby farmer for many years and was always interested in grocery business. He always kept active with his children as they grew up. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Ashley Lions and the American Legion. Survivors include his wife of Ashley, three sons, Michael Schauer of Fredonia, ND, Ken (Carol) Schauer of Littleton, Colorado and Rod (Sherri) Schauer of Plano, Texas, four daughters, Susan (Steve) Carpenter of Grand Forks, Donna Schauer of Des Moines, Iowa, Judy (Rudy) Aguilar of Harvard, Illinois and Diann Schauer of Miami, Florida, two sisters, Della Guthmiller and Loretta Jenner, both of Aberdeen, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His parents, one son, Bradley, one sister, Frieda Bertsch and one grandson, Matthew Schauer preceded him in death.
