Burial will be in Soldier Lutheran Cemetery, with military honors conducted by Legion Post 462 of Soldier and the U.S. Navy. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa. Milton C. Melby was born Aug. 5, 1925, at Soldier, the son of John and Sadie (Nelson) Melby. He was raised in Soldier and graduated from Soldier High School. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. Milton and Burnetta J. Larson were united in marriage on Feb. 15, 1944, at Elk Point, S.D., while he was in the Navy. After his discharge, the couple made their home at Pisgah, Iowa, and later moved to Soldier, where Milton owned and operated Melby Trucking until the late '70s. At that time he was a rural mail carrier until his retirement. Milton and Burnetta enjoyed traveling and spent time in Texas and Arizona during the winters. Burnetta died Dec. 22, 2006. Milton had recently been a resident of Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center at Dunlap, Iowa. He was a member of Soldier Lutheran Church. Survivors include two sons and their wives, Bryan and Pamela of Omaha, Neb., and Kevin and Bonnie of Soldier; two daughters, Sherry and her husband, Ron Little of Soldier, and Marlyn Kunze of Ute, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Delores Rustin of Whiting, Iowa. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; two infant sons, Keith LeRoyce and Ricky Rae; two brothers, Cleo and Howard; and a sister, Laverne Rustin.
