Born January 22, 1922, in Ida Grove, Iowa, Milton Milford Zobel was one of nine children born to Louis G. and Anna M. (Schwenk) Zobel. He was baptized January 29, 1922, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township, by his grandfather, Pastor Henry Schwenk. On May 20, 1947, Milton was united in marriage to Frieda R. Reuscher. To this union one daughter, Carol Ann, was born. Frieda preceded Milton in death on August 9, 2002. Milton served in the United States Air Force during World War II. Following his tour of duty, he returned to Ida Grove where he was active in the construction industry and other businesses since 1946. Milton was president of United Builders, Inc., a diversified construction and building supply company. He constructed many homes, commercial buildings, schools, and hospitals in the community and throughout the area. He also designed and built various churches, the more recent one being St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, his home church. Milton increased the physical size of Ida Grove by annexing 120 acres to the corporate area and developed seven separate housing additions. He began the trend in 1967 of apartment construction to help relieve a local housing problem, building fifty units for that purpose. He donated the Badger Creek Park and its improvements to the City, making Ida Grove the official home of a "Pet Rock Nest." He also donated the physical plant and improvements, including such things as showers, restrooms, sauna, etc., to the Mark Rec Center in the Medical Arts Building. He made substantial contributions to the Library, Horn Memorial Hospital, Medical Arts Center, St. Paul Lutheran Church, and many other community projects. Because of changing environmental conditions, Milton became interested in alternative housing systems and, on an experimental basis, designed and built an earth sheltered home which was presently his home. For many years, Milton was an active member in the Master Builders of Iowa, serving on the Board of Directors and as secretary, vice-president, and president. He also was on two committees on the national level of the Associated General Contractors of America. Locally, Milton served over the years on the Ida Grove Planning & Zoning Board and was a life member and past president of the Ida Grove Kiwanis Club. He was a member of the American Legion for over 60 years. On May 13, 2003, he married Elaine (DePauw) Hendrickson Splettstoeszer at Breezy Point Chapel in Brainerd, Minnesota. The couple enjoyed spending time at their vacation homes in Texas and Minnesota. Survivors include his wife, Elaine; a daughter, Carol Ann Hanson of Cedar Falls; six grandchildren, Joanna (Rev. Kirk) Perry of Granda Manan, Island New Brunswick, Canada, Jessica of Memphis, Tennessee, Jeremiah, Joshua, Josiah, and Jemimah (Jamie) Hanson all of Cedar Falls, Iowa; three brothers, Victor (Lois) Zobel of Ida Grove, Marlin (Beth) Zobel of Yorkville, ILL, and Vernon (Marlene) Zobel of Ida Grove; two step-children, Richard (Dee) Splettstoezer, and Diane Splettstpeszer; three step-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends. In addition to his first wife, Milton was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Edgar and Walter Zobel; and three sisters, Lusann Werning, Lydia Schlinz, and Ruth Werning.
