Milton T. Danbom, 101 (July 23) HEMINGFORD - Milton T. "Pete" Danbom, 101, passed away Sunday morning July 22, 2001, at the Hemingford Community Care Center. He was born June 19, 1900, in Randolph, the son of Andrew Gust (a Swedish immigrant) and Bertha (Hall) Danbom. When Pete was about 8 years old, the family moved to Delta, Colo., living there until 1910 when the family moved to Hemingford. Pete attended the Hemingford schools until the 10th grade and then he attended a Business college in Grand Island for a year. He grew up in Hemingford and worked with his father in the cement and masonry trade. He was married to his first wife Martha Wiltsey in November 1920. To this union a son Loren was born. Milton's sister Alfreda Toohey and her husband Leo adopted Loren after Martha died shortly after the birth. Milton and Grace E. White were married April 3, 1926. To this union seven children were born. Alan Danbom (Alice) of Hemingford, Dorothy Ray (Charles) of Hemingford, Norma Saling (William) of Pasco, Wash., William Danbom (Margaret) of Curtis, Margaret Donnelly (Lane) of Federal Way, Wash., Paul Danbom (Barbara) of Christmas Valley, Ore., and David Danbom (Beverly) of Pensacola, Fla. Pete was a resident at the Hemingford Community Care Center since 1995. He celebrated his 100th birthday on June 19, 2000, and was congratulated by several relatives and friends in the community. He celebrated his 101st birthday last month. He worked at the trade his father taught him until 1932 when he operated a Texaco gas station in Niobrara Avenue in Hemingford. It was known as Peteâs Texaco. In 1935 he gave up his lease and operated a trucking business. In 1937 he started farming and farmed until retiring in 1979 when he and Grace moved to town. For several years he continued with his former trade of masonry and house plastering while still operating the farm. He has plastered many homes in the Hemingford and Alliance area and has laid brick and block on several more. His favorite project was building fireplaces in homes. He had served on the Board of Directors of the Hemingford Cooperative Telephone Co. and was serving as the Chairman when the company converted to a dial system. He also served on the Hemingford Rural Fire District Board of Directors, and was the president of that board for several years. He was a member of the Hemingford Chapter of the American War Dads; a former Odd Fellow; a former Lions Club member and a 79-year member of the United Methodist Church in Hemingford. Pete played with some of the local softball and baseball teams during the 1930's. Those preceding him in death were his first wife Martha, and his second wife Grace, his parents and his brothers Arthur and Marion, his sisters Gladys and Alfreda, 2 granddaughters and 1 great-granddaughter, cousins and several other relatives. His survivors include all of his children, 18 Grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, a great-great step-granddaughter and a host of friends and relatives. Memorial services will be held Monday, August 13, at 10:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Hemingford. Pastor Craig Collins will officiate. Interment will be in the Hemingford Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials may be given to the Van Fund at the Hemingford Community Care Center. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
