A daughter of Giles H. and Francina Hull Smith, Minnie Belle Smith was born October 6, 1881, in Meigs County, Ohio. When 5 years of age she moved with her parents and two older sisters to Chase County, Nebraska, where her parents homesteaded. She attended the public schools in Chase County and Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln. She later taught school for a time in the rural area of her childhood home. On September 7, 1908, she was united in marriage to Lawrence R. McGaughey. Her husband was graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan in 1910 and accepted a Methodist pastorate in Nebraska in 1912. Mrs. McGaughey assisted her husband in various pastorates in Nebraska for 35 years, until Rev. McGaughey's retirement in 1947. Soon after retirement, Rev. and Mrs. McGaughey moved to Santa Ana, California, which has been their residence since that time. Mrs. McGaughey had been a very active member and worker in the Spurgeon Memorial Methodist church there since 1947. Surviving Mrs. McGaughey are her husband; one son, Rev. Melvin R. McGaughey, Bennington, Vermont; two daughters, Mrs. Allen Wild, Springfield, Oregon, and Mrs. Donald Kinch, Honolulu, Hawaii; eight grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mrs. Bertha Covert of Holyoke is a sister of Rev. McGaughey. Lloyd and Roy Covert and Guy Poe of this community are nephews. Son, Rev. Melvin R McGaughey memorial #62937366.
