Gillespie, of Jackson's River, also sister of Jno. Gillespie, of Monterey. Immediately after the ceremony, which was performed by Rev. James W. Gardner, the guests repaired to the dining room where a bountiful supper awaited them. While the guests were thus employed some of the neighborhood men and boys furnished a noisy serenade. On Thursday the groom's parents invited some guests and gave the happy couple a nice reception dinner. All join in wishing them a calm and happy journey on the matrimonial sea. Well Wisher Highland Recorder March 10, 1922 MRS WILLIAM GUTSHALL An unusually sad death was that of Mrs. Minnie Gutshall, wife of William Gutshall, which occurred Wednesday evening at her home on Dixons Hill. Following the birth of a child on Saturday, the young mother contracted pneumonia, and her life was soon despaired of. Mrs. Gutshall is survived by her aged father, James Gillespie, her husband and four small children. She also leaves two brothers. C. P. Gillespie, of Cass, W. Va., and John R. Gillespie, of Monterey. There were also three surviving sisters, Miss Annie Gillespie, of Monterey, Miss Sallie of Kingwood, W. Va., and Mrs. Geo. Orchard, of Lynchburg. The two absent sister were notified, by wire of the death, but it is not known whether they will be able to attend the funeral or not, which will take place this afternoon — Thursday—at 3 o’clock. Highland Recorder August 3, 1934 Obituary for James A. Gillespie On July the 25, 1934, the Grim Reaper came and claimed for his reward James A. Gillespie. Dear old uncle “Jimmy” as he was called had been in this country something like 70 years; he came here in his teens from Ireland. He first came to Massachusetts and from there he drifted to Virginia landing in Highland county, where he met some of his friends, namely: Michael Houlihan, John Murphy, James Carrigan, Michael Doyle and others not known to the writer. Uncle Jimmy was a man well informed and a good conversationalist. He was a devoted member of the Catholic church, always ready to attend his duties end the up-keep of the church. When the church was planned uncle Jimmy built the foundation which will be here for years to come. He had many-friends in Highland; he was well liked wherever he was known. A few years ago he had the misfortune to cut his knee with an ax, causing a stiff knee, but nevertheless he would come and see his friends just the same. But, we must say we have lost a friend that will never come to see us again. About fifty years ago he married Miss Gay Carpenter and to this union were born seven children. His wife died something over forty years ago. He was left with those children to ; care for—he did well. He has left to mourn his loss: Connell of Cass, W. Va., Sallie of Washington, John of Monterey and Miss Ann of Monterey. To show how uncle Jimmy was liked and held in esteem was the big crowd that attended his funeral; there were something like 50 to 75 people from Cass, W. Va., present, and the writer estimated the crowd would be eight hundred people. The funeral was conducted by Father McKenno of the St. Francis church, Staunton, Va. Uncle Jimmy was buried in the Hicks Grave yard, beside his wife. The writer joins with friends in extending the grief stricken children heartfelt sympathy. E. M, Dever
