She moved to Sheldon with her family in 1920 and graduated from high school there. She attended Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls and taught in Northwest Iowa schools. She graduated from Coe College in 1931. She was appointed Educational Missionary of the Women's Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church, serving at ther mission school at the Nizam's Dominions, a state in what was then colonial India. While home on furlough, she earned her master's degree at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinios. She later attended Columbia University in New York City. In addition to serving in India, she did deputation work for foreign mission in Iowa,Wisconsin,Illinois,Michigan and Ohio. After returning from her services in India, she taught school in Charles City, Iowa, for ten years. She married John J. De Groot in 1962. They lived in Sioux City until his death March 11, 1974. She then moved to the Franken Manor in Sioux Center. She is survived by many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by seven brother and sisters.
