About a month ago Miss Effa Carr, a daughter of a prominent farmer, A.W. Carr, living near Udall, died very suddenly and was buried without an investigation being made as to the cause of her death. Last week a sister of Miss Carr, Mrs. Elmer Wise, died very suddenly and under about the same circumstances as the first death. The matter caused some talk and an investigation was called for. The body of Miss Carr was taken up and Dr. Emerson of this city was sent for and an inquest was held before Justice Werden of Udall, the evidence of which brought forth the horrible fact that both ladies had been brought to an untimely death by that awful curse, the work of abortionists. Further evidence caused the arrest of the two attending physicians, Drs. W.A. Cox and H.M. Banta, who were brought to this city Saturday evening and placed in the county jail. A Visitor reporter called at the jail Sunday and interviewed both doctors from whom we obtained the following: Dr. H.M. Banta. "Mrs Elmer Wise, husband of Mrs. Wise, called on me about a month before her death and asked for some medicine for his wife, who wanted something for suppressed menses. I gave him a prescription containing alcohol, tinctures of ergot, tansy and iron with other ingredients and told Mr. Wise that it would be the thing he asked for but that if his wife was pregnant it would not cause abortion if taken according to directions. That is all the medicine I ever gave her. As to the other case, I know nothing about it myself, my partner, Mr. Cox having attended her." Dr. W.D. Cox. "The parents of Miss Effa Carr called on me some time before her death stating that they wanted medicine for stomach trouble. I gave them some medicine, but as it did no good, Miss Carr called on me herself and asked for medicine for the same trouble, saying she had pain in her stomach. after she had gone a few minutes one of Carr's neighbors came into the office and told me that the girl was pregnant and that she had told his (the neighbors) wife that "she was going to get rid of it or die in the attempt." I then immediately started out to see Miss Carr and overtook her before she reached home. After I threatened to tell her parents she confessed all to me and said that Mr. Jones, a washing machine agent, of Udall, her seducer, had given her half a pint of ergot and that she had taken it all at one time that he had also give her some instruments to use. I then went home with her and making an examination found her to be in very bad shape. I then gave her morphine to allay the pain and prescribed baths, etc. I removed the trouble the next day and afterwards called Dr. Young in who remained with me in attending her until she died." - Visitor.
