DUNN TAKES HER LIFE BY HANGING Mrs. A. A. Dunn, who lived many years in Villisca and vicinity and had been a resident of Montgomery County all her life, ended her life by hanging herself early Monday morning at her home on East Third Street. She had bee in poor health for more than a year and had been cared for at the state hospital at Clarinda during her last several months. Recently she had been pronounced as sufficiently recovered to return to her home and was brought back two weeks preceding her death. She appeared to be happy at home and on Sunday attended a family dinner at the home of her son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Rolland Dunn and seemed to enjoy the day. She went with members of her family for an automobile ride during the day and was in good spirits. Since her return from the hospital she had refused offers to her husband to empty a girl to be company for her in the home, assuring him that the family need not worry about her. However, she frequently expressed fear of being retuned to the hospital and though she was as often assured she would not be taken there again, it is thought this fear lead her to take her life. She had not medicated in any way that she intended to take her life and apparently was sleep when her husband left home at 3 a.m. to to make his daily trip over his route to deliver a daily newspaper to Clarinda, Shenandoah, and other points Monday morning. When Mr. Dunn arrive home from his trip about 6:40 a.m. he entered his home by the side door and at once noticed a light in the hallway. Wondering if he had left it turned on he went to investigate and found his wife hanging from the stair banister. He called for help and a physician was summoned but apparently the lifeless body had been hanging for an hour and a half. Coroner Walter Sellergren of Red Oak also was notified. The body was taken down and removed to the Wolfe & Gourley Funeral Home. Mrs.Dunn had tied a pair of silk hose about her neck and to that she had attached a strip of bed clothing which she knotted around the banister to which she climbed by placing a small stool o a chair. After tying the bed clothing about the banister she shoved the stool from under her feet, leaving her body suspended, though her feet were but two to three inches from the stairs. Minnie Myrtle Devine, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Devine of Red Oak, was born on a farm near Red Oak on October 6, 1881, and was 53 years old at the time of her death. She was married to Augustus Anderson Dunn in Red Oak, Iowa on September 23, 1904. They moved to Villisca six years ago to make their home. To this union eight children were born, one of whom, a daughter is deceased. Those who with the husband survive are Mrs. LaVaughn Bergren of Falls City, Nebraska, and Stanley, Darwin, Rolland, Robert, Loren, and Willabelle of Villsica. She leaves also the following brothers and sisters; Miss Margaret Devine, Red Oak; Mrs. Ella Cline, Lincoln, Nebraska; Mrs. Grace Davis, Rocky Ford, Colorado; W. J. Devine, Madison, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Arthur Talbot, Robert, Andy, and George Devine, Villisca. Mrs. Dunn was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Her funeral was held there Wednesday at 2:30 p.m with the Rev. Arthur Mortensen conducting the service. The pall bearers were cousins of the deceased, were Shirley, Alden, and Russell Devin, Darrell Talbot, and Quincy and Will Dunn. The body was taken to the home of the deceased Wednesday morning where friends viewed the remains from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. It was taken from there to the church for the funeral service. Interment was in the Villisca Cemetery. Mrs. Dunn’s daughter, Mrs. LaVaugh Bergren of Falls City, Nebraska, and her brother W. J. Devine were here to attend the funeral.
