Mariam, eldest daughter of Mr. Joseph Morton, aged 23 years, left her home at New Germany, last June to accompany her Father to Liverpool where he was engaged in building a ship. At the expiration of a few weeks she returned with a friend to Bridgewater. On her way home – on the 4th of this month, she complained of feeling unwell, but expected to proceed for home in a short time. Her disease gained strength and soon terminated her earthly course. The skill of her physician could not check its onward course – death had marked her for his victim. I visited her during her illness. She had not, up to that time, obtained a satisfactory evidence of her acceptance with Christ, altho’ she had been seeking for an assurance of his love for many months. Before she died, however, she was enabled to rejoice in God her Saviour, and left a satisfactory testimony that she has gone to be with Jesus. During the day on which she expired, she prayed and praised until about six o’clock, P.M., when without a struggle, her happy spirit took its flight we trust to the world of glory. Her remains were removed to New Germany, and interred on Friday the 20th inst. The occasion was improved by the writer from Luke xix. 34. It was a solemn day. I trust the impressions on that occasion will not soon be forgotten. A large circle of friends and relatives are left to mourn their loss. May they be enabled to say with Job, “The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away – blessed be the name of the Lord.” The good work is still advancing in the places where I am labouring. The third Sabbath of this month I Baptized four converts at New Germany. I expect to baptize others soon.
