Description	:	Miriam Ruth Sigler Shafer, 93 of Middletown, and most recently of Tranquillity at Fredericktowne, returned to her heavenly Father on March 22, 2016. She was the wife of Kenneth L. She was the wife of Kenneth L. Shafer whom she married Jan 2, 1946, and who predeceased her in July 1981. Miriam was born July 23, 1922 to Ralph W and Alice V Miller Sigler. Miriam grew up on the family farm on Sigler Road in Jefferson, then moved to Middletown where her family continued to farm for many years. Miriam graduated from Frederick High School in 1940. She was predominantly a homemaker loving to quilt, sew, and bake. Raised as a farm girl she knew how to work and even at her very late stage in life would be found washing, ironing, and hanging all the curtains in her home in one day. Miriam had a wonderful sense of humor and an easy laugh. Miriam also worked at the Hanover Shoe Factory in Middletown, Beachley’s Variety Store in Middletown, and Eyerly’s which became BonTon in Frederick. Her faith journey began at St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Jefferson. After marrying Ken she became an active member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, Feagaville where she played the organ and piano for church and Sunday School, and a member of the Ladies Aide Society. After her husband passed she became an active member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran in Middletown, where she quilted with the Zion Quilters for many years. Miriam is predeceased by her parents, her brothers and sisters-in-law Ralph C Sigler and wife Ellen “Sue”, John “Jack” Sigler and wife Virginia, and Robert “Bob” Sigler and wife Irene. She is also predeceased by brothers-in-law Oscar L Shafer, Jr and wife Frances, Harold Shafer and wife Millie, brother-in-law James Loughran. She is survived by her daughter Marlena Putman and husband Patrick, granddaughters Bronwyn Kline and husband Kalley (Wolfsville), Luann Cannon and husband Chris (Knoxville), grandson Scott Putman and wife Meghann (Boonsboro). Also great-grandchildren Kaleb and Hannah Kline, Emma, Lainey, and Levi Cannon, and Connor Putman. She is also survived by sister-in-law Rosalyn Loughran Allen and husband Roy of Hobe Sound, FL, Judy Kraushaar and husband Ed, Falling Waters WV, Candy Inman of Williamsport, brother-in-law John Shafer and wife Brenda of Middletown, and many nieces and nephews. Miriam and her family thank the staff at Tranquillity for their care and concern while she called Tranquillity home. Also Carroll Hospice for their tender care and support during the last part of her journey. Celebration of life Plans. Viewing will be held at the Donald B Thompson Funeral Home, East Main St, Middletown on Saturday, March 26 from 3:00-5:00 pm. Services will be held Monday, March 28, 10:30 AM at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Middletown. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Zion Lutheran’s cemetery on Green Street, Middletown immediately following the service.
