Wiltace Anna Salome Conard A consecrated life, like precious ointment, diffuses its fragrance most widely when the vase that holds it is broken. It then both rises in a cloud of incense to Heaven and also scatters its aroma over a broader area of earth than ever before. The minds of adverse criticism no longer bear its perfume away and waste it upon the desert air. The foul breath of envy or uncharitableness no more displaces it in the social atmosphere. But, in the holy calm that reigns around, its full strength is disclosed and its power to permeate society is felt. It needs neither swinging golden censer nor aid of a consecrated priest to speed its flight, but is free and untrampelled hastens on its blessed mission. The careworn and bereaved pilgrims, who on to tripped in the race, remain behind to complete life's journey, inhale its rare fragrance and and are refreshed and inspired. Such is the case with the life whose probation has just terminated. While its beauty has been seen and admired for many years, yet it was not complete without its peaceful close and therefore could not be fully appreciated. It remained for death to break the alabaster box and liberate the residue of those influences which, while she lived in the flesh, were more largely confined to her personal presence and immediate circle in which she moved. As we are gathered here this morning there comes upon our hearts the gentle and hallowed influence of an unseen presence - a life consecrated to holy purposes and now transported to a sphere of more rapid and more blessed development. Anna Salome Conard was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where she spent her early childhood and died in Marysville, Ohio, May 12, 1904. Her parents, Enos and Grace Conard, removed with their family to Hillsboro, Ohio, where they resided until death a number of years ago. Of the family there still remains Mrs. Kate Beeson, Miss Sallie Conard, Willian and John Conard of Hillsboro, Ohio, Enos Conard of Springfield, Ohio, Isaac Conard of Ellwood, Illinois, and Mrs. Lonidas Piper of Marysville, Ohio. About sixteen years ago, Miss Conard graduated from the Lakeside Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio, as a trained nurse and consecrated her life to that humanitarian and Christlike vocation. She spent ten years in this work at Cleveland, Ohio, when failing health compelled her to rest from her arduous labors and remove to Marysville. For six years she had resided in the home of her sister, Mrs. Judge Piper, where the messenger, we call death, found her on last Thursday. For almost ten years disease had been preying upon her system, but not until last Christmas did she consent to take her bed. During these months she has been the most patient and cheerful sufferer, enduring her affliction and looking forward to the trying ordeal with Christian fortitude which was as beautiful as it is rare. She contemplated her departure with serenity and wrote in detail requests touching her funeral on a paper which was found after her decease. Among her requests was one that Mrs. Perfect sing two of her favorite hymns, "Christ is All in All" and "Saved by Grace." She was converted and united with the church at thirteen years of age, and has been a loyal and consistent member throughout the years. Her love for the church was deep and genuine. She was faithful in the outward duties of the Christian life, but more than this had developed a devout spirit such as is too seldom seen among Christ's followers. She was a regular attendant upon the social means of grace in which she cheerfully bore a part. For many years she sang with efficiency in the choir and mid-week prayer service in her home church. She was a zealous worker in both home and foreign missionary societies, and such was her love for the work she seemed to as happy in the performance of this, by many considered irksome duty by collecting dues as when taking part in the programs of the meetings. She was a member of the King's Daughters, in the blessed work of which she was closely identified - being so long as health permitted the leader of the Whatsoever Circle, and until her death a member of the Helping Hand Circle. She loved the word of God devoutly, and the numerous passages marked in her Bible show clearly that the trend of her thought was toward the deeper phases of the Christian life. Her quiet and dignified bearing, together with her gentle and charitable spirit, demonstrated to all the fact that she was in every sense of the term a Christian lady. Take my heart in full surrender, Let thy will be mine; Fill my life with joyful service, All the glory thine. Give me only what will fit me, Best to serve thee here, Give thyself as is needed, Through the coming year.
