There are newspaper articles which give extensive information about the hanging. Monroe's family did in fact claim his body and did bring him back to the family farm for burial at this location. (The Fall 2013 issue of The Madison County Musings, quarterly magazine of The Madison County Genealogical & Historical Society in Huntsville, Arkansas, has a 12 page story on the train robbery and Monroe McDonald, which includes all of the newspaper articles, including articles about the hanging published as far away as New York.) The tombstone photo shown here is the new tombstone which was placed at the gravesite in 2011 by The Madison County Genealogical & Historical Society. There are several fieldstones under the old cedar tree at this location, and the new tombstone was placed near them.
