At his home in the suburbs of Colusa Friday afternoon at half past five, he died, after having been ill for many months. His death was not unexpected. A citizen of quiet worth he had come here from Illinois twenty-two years ago and settled in Glenn county, and moved to Colusa county twelve years ago. Morgan Long was born in Buck county, New Jersey, 75 years ago the 13th of December last. He went to Illinois at a very early age, and thence to this-state. He lived in Pearl township, Illinois. Three years ago the old couple, accompanied by their daughter, Mrs. E. W. Tadlock, revisited their old home at Nebo, Ill., where the family assembled and their golden wedding was celebrated. The bride wore an elegant black silk dress, every stitch of which she made with her own hands. No machine was used. They had a most delightful visit with their children and grand children about them. In that land, where all honor and glory are accorded to parents and grand parents, they were happy and with sweet memories they returned to Colusa. Fifty-three years ago he married Miss Martha Stark, who survives him, and they afterwards lived on his ranch near Stonyford. Of their eight children, seven survive him. They are John, who left his home at Pleasant Hill, Ill., for California last night, to be present at the funeral; Mrs. Mary Draper, Pearl, Ill., Jack Long, Diamond, Mo., Mrs. Rachel Jones, Nebo, Ill., Mrs. Ellen Stone, Nebo., Ill., Mrs. Mary Tadlock, Colusa, Cal., Mrs. Miriam White, Elk Creek, Cal., and a daughter, Rebecca, dead. Besides these there are 31 grand-children and four great-grand-children. A good man has gone, and when his neighbors think of him it will be with the best love and kindness, for he was a man of truth and honor among them. He went back in the fall to revisit those near and dear to him in his old home and the winter was too severe for him. He had a lingering pneumonia and growing weaker and weaker, he returned to his cottage home amid the flowers of California, where his life ended, and he left to those who honored and loved him the greatest of earthly blessings, a good name. ***************** There is another Morgan Long living about the same time as our Morgan Long. The other Morgan Long served as a Private in the Confederate States of America, Company G, 2nd Arkansas Infantry under the command of Colonel's Daniel C. Govan, Thomas C. Hindman, John W. Scaife & Elisha Warfield; Lt. Colonel's Joseph W. Bocage, Egbert G. Brasher, Robert F. Harvey & Charles E. Patterson and Major Arthur T. Meek. * * * * * * Our Morgan Long was born in Buck County, New Jersey to Fannie Deemer and Thomas Stewart Long. His parents moved to Pearl Township, Illinois when he was very young and as a young man he sympathized with the Union and not the Confederacy as some historians have said (confirmed Union ties with information found in diary). Morgan married Martha Keziah Stark on March 31, 1857 in Pike, Illinois. They have eight children; John T. Long, Mrs. Mary Draper, James J. Long, Mrs. Rachel Jones, Mrs. Ellen Stone, Mrs. Mary Tadlock, Mrs. Miriam White and Rebecca, who died at a very young age. With his family they crossed the plains to California, first settling in Glenn County/Colusa County in 1888 and to Colusa County in 1900. His neighbors thought very highly of him for he was a man of truth and honor among them.
