He was appointed superintendent of schools, institute conductor adn deuputy superintendent of public instruction for the state of South Dakota, giving practically his entire time and attention to this executive duties. he held a number of postions of public trust and responsibility and in 1912 was honored by being chosen a member of the state Senate. In politics he gave unfaltering to the Republican Party, and farateranlly he was affiliated with the Masons and the Independant Order of Odd Fellows. On April 2, 1879 he was united in marraiage to Eva May Putney, they had one son, Arthur Moritz. In the 1880 census of Dakota Territory, he, Eva and son M Arthur are in McCook County sD, he is farming. In 1910 they are in Rapid City Pennington County S D, by 1920 they are in Decorah Iowa and are also there in 1930, he is 77 and Eva is 71. From his obituary in the Decorah IA paper He came to Winneshiek county by covered wagon when he was 1 year old, he was the oldest son of Mr and Mrs Moritz who were German immigrand stock. Their first home was in Canoe township. In Bluffton IA where Mr Lange acquired his early education, he later became a school teacher. Officating in a little backwoods school. It as then he decided to seek his fortune in the West that his adventures began. In company with a group of young men he went overland to South Dakota. In McCook County he found conditions warrented him in homesteading a piece of land that he acquired in the usual manner- breaking up the prairie, living in a shack, cooking on a sheet-iron stove, using dry buffalo grass and buffelo chips for fuel. There were no more than a dozen families in McCook County sD at the time but settlers were coming in, and Mr Lange employed an earlier experience in engineering to run lines for homesteaders. He also taught school. As the country filled up, heis previous experience made him a natural for the position of county superintendent. From that office he went up to the state superintendant's office as deputy. He prepared the first course of study used in the schools of the state of South Dakota, he also took an active part in state politics, in the Republican party. While this was traspiring, he found the time to study natural history and the wild life in general and the geological formations. After his return to Decorah IA, Lange continued to follow the hobbies he had interested himself in from his pioneer days, his home was a vertible museam. Surrounded by his collections, Indian relics adn geological speciments form various parts of the United States, he spent the afternoon of his life in reading, doing chores about this home and visiting with friends. His mental facilities were alert due to the fact, in part, that he was a constant reader. He was keenly interested in Decorah IA and its surroundings. For some years he represented the first ward on the City Council, with credit to himself and his constituents. On April, 2, 1879 he married Eva Mae Puntency, the daughter of Mr and Mrs Wililam Puntency, also pioneer of Canoe Township. Eva May died Mrch 11, 1937.
