Monday, May 23rd, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Haverhill with Fr. Louis Jaeger, celebrant officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery with full military honors by the VFW Harry C. Harter Post #839. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Short and his family. Born on August 21st, 1918, in Carroll County, Iowa, he was the son of Howard and Una Mae (Thomas) Blum. He graduated from the Perry High School's class of 1935. On May 21st, 1940, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Ryan at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Haverhill. They made their home in Bayard/Scranton following WWII and then moved to Haverhill in 1954. Short did sales until 1960, when they purchased her parents business, Ryan's Store in Haverhill. They operated it as husband and wife team until closing it - Blum's Tavern and Grocery - in December of 2004. He was a member of the Frank Lewis Glick American Legion Post #46. Short will be fondly remembered for his love of family, fishing, cooking, reading, politics, and current events. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the United States Navy, and was a great supporter of the Haverhill community. Saturday, May 21st, would be their 65th anniversary of marriage. Left to celebrate his life are his loving wife of 65 years, Evelyn, his children Gary Blum of Los Angeles, CA, Pat (Ron) Ikan of Solon, Larry (Gail) Blum of Marion, Iowa, five grandchildren: Michael Blum, John Blum, Shelley Smith, John Ikan and Shane Null, 11 great-grandchildren: Morgan, Eli, Stuart, Denem, Rachel, Connor, Avalon, Max, Lennox and twins Cory and Kellen, his sister Doris "Sally" (Sam) Lyle of Laurel, step-sister Lucille Cox of Cedar Rapids, sister-in-law Mildred Blum of Newton, step-brothers Bobbie and Roger Jay both of Marshalltown, and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. In death he has rejoined his parents, step-father Bob Jay, brothers Lyle "Toad" and Max "Jim" and step-brother Bill Jay.
