(NOTE: The Quaker records concerning the name of the daughter of Zachariah Moorman who married Charles Johnson (1753-1813/19) is recorded as both "Mary" and the diminutive (nickname) for Mary at the time "Molley". In this bio both will be used interchangeably. Mary's mostly illegible tombstone reads, "Mrs. Mary Johnson". Most information concerning the relationship between Mary Moorman and Charles Johnson is gleaned from Quaker records. Attached to this memorial are two pages numbered, 53 and 54, which help document their relationship. Both pages are records from Lynchburg, Virginia, South River Monthly Meetings of Female Quakers ("Friends"). Page "53" recorded a meeting dated 18 January 1778 that stated, "Charles Johnson & Mary Moorman published intentions of marriage the 1st time." Further down page "53" the next meeting of the "Women Friends" at South River was dated 15 August 1778 (the day before the marriage of Charles Johnson and Mary Moorman). Page "54" recorded that on that date, "Charles Johnson and Mary Moorman signified they continued their intentions of marriage with each other". Further down page "54" another entry at a "Women Friends" meeting at South River dated 19 September 1778 stated, "The Friends (Quakers) appointed to attend the marriage of Charles Johnson and Mary Moorman reported that it was orderly accomplished". Mary "Molley" Moorman, daughter of Zacariah Moorman and Elizabeth Ann Terrell Moorman, married Charles Johnson on 16 Aug 1778 at South River, Bedford Co., Virginia. Among several witnesses were Christopher Johnson and Zachariah Moorman, fathers of the groom and bride (Ref: "Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy", Vol. VI, p332; "Our Quaker Friends of Ye Olden Time", J. P. Bell Company (Publishers), Lynchburg, Virginia, p79; also see attached marriage record). NOTE: The following unexplained entry was found in the Quaker notes: "Where as Molley Johnson formally Moorman hath been educated and brought up amongst us as a people called Quakers hath so far deviated from our principals as to get married by an (sic) hireling priest we therefore deny all such practices & disown her from being any longer a Member of our Society until it may please the Lord to give her a Sight of her outgoings & a place of Repentance which is the desire of us the 16th of the 10th Mo (Month) 1779. Signed: Sarah Goode Elk Although two (2) dozen (24) DAR applicants were accepted as members, and are still members, based on the Revolutionary War service of Charles Johnson (b. 9-27-1753 Campbell County, Virginia; d. 1-17-1813 Lynchburg, Virginia; DAR Ancestor #: A063066) who married Mary Moorman (1758-1849), the DAR is no longer accepting his original submitted war record and requires new sourced proof of his Revolutionary War service for future applicants and has the following comments concerning his war record on their website (Emphasis is DAR's): "THIS MAN WAS QUAKER AT S.RIVER MM,LYNCHBURG VA-M.THERE 1778,CH.B.1780-98; JOHNSTON GEN + LYNCHBURG'S PIONEER QUAKER' 2ND BK GIVES LIST OF FEW MEN WHO WERE READ OUT FOR REV SERVICE.C.J NOT INCLUDED.DATACF. CKS 8-22-1984." The following is my translation of the DAR's comments for not accepting Charles Johnson's submitted war record found on the DAR website: This man was a Quaker at South River Monthly Meetings, Lynchburg, Virginia, married there 1778, children born 1780-1798; Reference: "A History of Lynchburg's Pioneer Quakers and Their Meeting House, 1754-1936" by Douglas Summers Brown, Published by J. P. Bell Company, Inc (1936) gives list of a few men who were read out for Revolutionary War service, Charles Johnson was not included. DataCF.CKS 6-22-1984. [NOTE: I believe the original DAR applications were based on the following: "Charles Johnson (1853-1813/19) served, 1776-1777, as a private in Capt. William Mosby's Company, Col. Josiah Parker's 5th Virginia Regiment. Charles was born in Campbell County, Virginia and died in Lynchburg." Source: "Lineage Book, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution", Volume LXXIIL, 1909, Page 72056.] Charles Johnson, as noted, was a Quaker and the crux of the DAR's objection to his Revolutionary War service was partially based on the Quaker records of Lynchburg, Virginia which did not record his being "read out" for such Revolutionary War service. (A copy of a 1777 Revolutionary War pay roll record confirming "a" Charles Johnson served under Capt. William Mosby is attached to the FAG memorial of Charles Johnson (1753-1813/19). The 5th Virginia Regiment was formed in February 1776 at Richmond County Courthouse. Companies recruited men from several Virginia counties including Bedford where Charles Johnson (1753-1813/19) was living at the time. The book, "Campbell Chronicles and Family Sketches : Embracing the History of Campbell County, Virginia, 1782-1926", Lynchburg, Va.: J.P. Bell Co., 1927, contains the following references to Charles Johnson: "Charles Johnson and Benjamin Arthur, inspectors at John Lynch's three public Lynchburg warehouses in 1798, asked for more pay because of the increase in the amount of tobacco passing through their hands and because prices of commodities had almost doubled", page 138; "The first record found of the manufacture of tobacco in Campbell (County) was in 1804 when leave was given Charles Johnson to stem and manufacture tobacco", page 139; "May 7, 1805 Charles Johnson was appointed constable", page 63; "In 1811, Charles Johnson, James C. Moorman and John Lynch, et al, were directors of the bank in Lynchburg", page 75. The 1810 US Census of Lynchburg, Campbell County, Virginia enumerated the household of Charles Johnson in the age range of "45 years and over" (his actual age was 57). Also living in the household was a female in the age range of "45 years and older". She was most probably his wife, Mary "Molly" (Moorman) Johnson, whose actual age was 52. Charles Johnson's death date is in question. Most records state "Aft. 1810" but DAR records are more specific without sources, namely 17 Jan 1813 at Lynchburg, Virginia or 17 Jan 1819 at Lynchburg, Virginia (Ancestor #: A063066). Regardless, as recorded below, his widow Mary Johnson, was enumerated living alone in the 1820 US Census of Lynchburg, Lynchburg Co., Virginia. The 07 Aug 1820 US Census of Lynchburg, Lynchburg Co., Virginia enumerated the household of Mary Johnson, most probably the widow of Charles Johnson (1853-1813/19). She was the only person in the household and was enumerated in the age range of "45 and older"; her actual age was 62. The 1830 US Census of Lynchburg, Campbell Co, Virginia enumerated the household of Mary Johnson. She was enumerated in the age range of "70-79" (her actual age was 72 Y/O). Also living in the household was an unidentifiable female in the age range of "5-9 Y/O". The 1840 US Census of Virginia enumerated several households headed by a Mary Johnson but none were in the age range of "80-89" which would have reflected her actual age of 82 Y/O. I suspect she was too sickly and feeble to be living alone at her age. The death date and death place of Mary Johnson was recorded as "25 Seventh 1849", which translates to "25 July 1849", in Virginia. It was recorded at the South River Quaker Monthly Meeting and also noted "Mary died in her 93rd (sic-91 st year) yr" (Ref: "Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy", Vol. VI, p319).
