Andy was born on March 21, 1922 in Nebraska, the son of Andrew and Florence (Trotter) Garvey. He graduated from Albion High School in 1940 and enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in April, 1941. Andy served in Europe as Squad Leader in the 334th Infantry. During the Korean Conflict, he was First Sergeant in the 85th Infantry and served in the Far East as Sgt. Major of 87th Ordnance Battalion. At the time of retirement in September, 1963, Andy was serving as Operations Sergeant of South Dakota US Army Recruiting District in Sioux Falls. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Paratrooper Wings, Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal and other Service Medals. Andy was employed by the US Post Office in Sioux Falls from 1964 to 1978 and Augustana College from 1979 to 1990. Andy was united in marriage to Wilma “Jeanne” Mallory on January 19, 1946 at Leavenworth, KS. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church for over 49 years. There he served as Elder, Chairman of Board of Deacons, Christian Education Committee and the Children’s Ministry Board. He was active in Sunday School for over 30 years, teaching in the elementary area and Superintendent for many years. Andy was a life member of Disabled American Veterans and RSVP. He was active in the America Reads Program, helping 1st and 2nd graders read for 14 years at Eugene Field Elementary and 5 years at Harvey Dunn Elementary. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jeanne; a daughter, Tamara; two sisters, Rose Marie and Gerry; two brothers, Robert and James; and a grandson, Jason.
