Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. James Kruse officiating. Burial is 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Rosehill Cemetery in Albion, with military honors. Visitation is from 2-8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City. Mr. Garvey was born June 16, 1925, in Lindsay, to Andrew J. and Florence (Trotter) Garvey. In 1930, the family moved to Albion. He attended schools in Albion and Madison. He joined the Merchant Marines in 1943, serving nine months before being given a medical release. He then served in the United States Navy from May 24, 1944-May 22, 1946. After his discharge, he worked for his father in Storm Lake, Iowa, manufacturing husking rollers. They moved the plant to South Sioux City in 1959. In 1952 he and Jim Thompson bought Mitchell's Cafe. He moved to Litchfield, Minn., for several years and then back to South Sioux City in 1959. He continued the family manufacturing business for several years, bought and operated Roberts Poultry and then started Garvey's Tree Service in 1968. He married Jo Ann (Miller) Peterson Aug. 17, 1962, in Auburn. In 1980, they, along with their son Bill and his wife Donna, purchased Sletten's Trophies. In 1984, he and his wife built a building for the trophy business and renamed it Garvey's Trophy Shoppe, Inc. He retired when the sold they business to the original owners in 1991. He was a member of the church, where he served on the church council and as church treasurer, a volunteer fireman in the 1950s, served on the draft board, an ambassador for the Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska, chairman of the South Sioux City Planning and Zoning Committee, Arboretum member, regular donor at Siouxland Blood Bank, charter member of South Sioux City Rotary Club, named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation and was active in Pete's Feeders for over 45 years. He and his wife received the Ak-sar-ben Good Neighbor Award in 1978. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and having coffee. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Bill (Donna) Garvey of South Sioux City and Bob (Kelly) Garvey of Phoenix, Ariz.; one brother, Andrew Garvey of Sioux Falls, S.D.; one sister, Gerry Rowher of Phoenix; one sister-in-law, Annie Garvey of Phoenix; step-mother, Alice Byrne of South Sioux City; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara; one brother, James; one sister, Rose Marie; and one infant sister. Contributor: Jett (47754513) •
