Joe Stiff was born February 8, 1938, in Rochester, Iowa, the son of A.C. "Ace" and Elsie (Christian) Stiff. He was a 1956 graduate of Springdale High School. On March 23rd, 1958, he married Velma Stafford at Rochester, Iowa. He worked at Wendling Quarries in Moscow, Iowa, for 27 years. He helped Ron Alpen build a Ford dealership in West Liberty, Iowa, worked for Muscatine County for 2 years and then went to work as Public Works Director for the City of West Liberty for 7 years. In 1994 he and his wife started Joe's Trucking and Backhoe LLC in West Liberty, Iowa, which he operated until his retirement in 2001. They also owned and operated a cabin area with 20 rental cabins on the Cedar River from 1976 until 1997. Joe worked for the IDOT, pushing snow in the winters of 2003 and 2004. Joe was very active in the community, where he was proud to have been a Webelos leader for 10 years, a member of the West Liberty City Council, Chamber of Commerce, and school board. He was a member of Rotary for 27 years and a member of the Lions Club since 1998. Joe's passion was running heavy equipment. Thanks to Ken Morrison he was able to do that right up until September of 2005. Survivors include his wife, Velma, 3 daughters, Myrna (Mike) Kirkpatrick and Tracy (Scott) Peters, both of West Liberty, Iowa, and Kara of Muscatine, Iowa, and 1 son Aaron of Kansas City, Missouri. Three brothers, Dale (Emogene), Bill (Jeannine), Don (Sharon), all of Tipton, Iowa, and one sister, Lela (Edwin) Slach of Iowa City, Iowa. Six grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Myron and Leon. Iowa City Press-Citizen, November 9, 2005
