Blue Maquoketa shale and loess are used. The shale is obtained two miles north of town just above Bixby's Park on Bear Creek. It is from the top of the Maquoketa formation. This clay shale is mixed with varying proportions of loess procured from the ridge just north of Edgewood. Blue Maquoketa shale and loess are used. The shale is obtained two miles north of town just above Bixby's Park on Bear Creek. It is from the top of the Maquoketa formation. This clay shale is mixed with varying proportions of loess procured from the ridge just north of Edgewood. For brick and three inch tile the proportion is one third Maquoketa Clay and two thirds loess; for 6 inch and 8 inch tile it is one fourth clay shale and three - fourths loess. The more of the Maquoketa clay that is used the harder the brick and tile. The material alone makes an extremely hard brick. The plant has a Brewer Brick and tile machine, a Penfield Crusher, thirty horsepower engine and thirty horsepower boiler. The product is burned in a downdraft kiln, after drying in large drying sheds. Mellen was born near Akron, Lorain county, Ohio, June 21, 1847, the oldest of a family of four children. In 1851 he emigrated to Iowa, spending the greater part of his life in the vicinity of Edgewood, Clayton county. In 1868 he was united in marriage with Miss Ida Fenner, who survives him. To this union were born four children - Guy who died in 1888, at the age of 14; Grace, George and Gertrude of Fayette, Iowa. His mother, who for the past two years has been a helpless invalid, also survives him. He died at Fayette, Iowa, Friday May 30, 1913, after a prolonged illness. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. William Galbreth, pastor of the Randalia Methodist Episcopal church. A brief service was held before leaving Fayette Saturday afternoon; the service proper at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H.F. Beyer at Edgewood on Sunday, June 1st, at two oclock p.m. The Upper Iowa University Quartete, consisting of Professors Bennett, Werner, McIntosh and Onclay, furnished the music. The remains were laid to rest in the Edgewood cemetery. Card of Thanks.
