Read More	EDGEWOOD MAN SUICIDES Morris Mellen, a well known and well-to-do farmer living about two miles west of Edgewood, committed suicide by hanging Sunday afternoon, while in a despondent state of mind. Mr. Mellen had been in poor health for some months, and it is believed that this is the cause for the rash act. He leaves a wife, and two children -- a son and a daughter. It has been well known that Mr. Mellen was much discouraged over his condition, but no one believed that his condition was such as to prompt him to destroy his own life. On Sunday the family missed him from the home and upon searching the premises found his lifeless body hanging by a rope in a silo. Coroner A. D. Brown of Manchester was notified of the tragedy, and it being evident that it was a case of suicide, no inquest was held. The tragedy has brought a deep sorrow to the family, and to the friends of Mr. Mellen, who was honored and respected by the entire community. Sincere sympathy is felt for the bereaved family. MELLEN The community of Edgewood was much shocked when, on last Sunday afternoon, word was passed around that Morris Mellen was dead, and there was grief in many hearts. Morris Mellen was born on the farm where he died, on November 20, 1857. He was the youngest of four brothers, the other three having passed away before him. Here he went to school grew to manhood and then settled down for his life's work. His whole life was spent on the one farm in Honey Creek township. Delaware county, except two years which were spent In other parts of the state. Here on Sunday morning, November 11, 1917, he died at the age of 59 years, 11 months and 22 days. On September 18, 1881, he was married to Miss Belle Lash and for over thirty-six years they walked together. Two children were born to them, a son and a daughter, Fred and Audra, both of whom are at home and with his wife mourn the loss of a loving husband and father. Besides, there is a large circle of relatives and friends who through years of acquaintance came to know him as a true friend, for those who knew him best loved him most. Being naturally of a quiet disposition and not given to much speaking he was not so well known except to those who had opportunity by long acquaintance to know him, and they appreciated him. In the family circle he was a good husband and father, always seeking to bring happiness to those he loved. As a neighbor and friend he could be depended on in the hour of need. The funeral service was held on Tuesday, November 13, at the home where a large number of relatives and friends gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to him and to thus express their sympathy with the family in its sorrow. The service was conducted by the Rev. S. C. Bretnall, of the Methodist church, and the body was laid away in the Edgewood cemetery. Manchester Democrat - Manchester, Iowa - November 21, 1917
