Description	:	Biography: Myrtle Esther Nickelson was born on February 25, 1928, at the family farm west of Havelock. Her childhood was spent alternately at the farm and in Zephyrhills, Fla., due to her father’s poor health. After his death, the family returned to Havelock to stay. Raised with four brothers, Myrt was determined to keep up with them and she became a very good basketball player on the Havelock high school team which placed second in the state tournament in 1943. Read More	Biography: Myrtle Esther Nickelson was born on February 25, 1928, at the family farm west of Havelock. Her childhood was spent alternately at the farm and in Zephyrhills, Fla., due to her father’s poor health. After his death, the family returned to Havelock to stay. Raised with four brothers, Myrt was determined to keep up with them and she became a very good basketball player on the Havelock high school team which placed second in the state tournament in 1943. She graduated from Havelock High School in 1945 and for a time worked at the telephone office in Des Moines. Myrt married her childhood sweetheart, Dick Logan, on June 2, 1946, at the family farm in the same room in which she was born. Dick’s teaching profession took them from Storm Lake to Woden and back to Havelock where they raised four daughters. Myrt, a homemaker and school bus driver, loved to bake and decorate cakes and also loved sewing matching dresses for her girls. She loved the opera and enjoyed singing in choral groups especially at Christmas. When the hospital was opened in Pocahontas in 1964, Myrt was one of the original employees. Her duties as a nurse’s aide included, care of new mothers and their newborns, as well as patient care in the medical/surgical area. Myrt was active in the Havelock United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School and vacation Bible school for many years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 65 years and was recently honored for her 50 year membership in the Order of the Eastern Star. She also was a member of the Spring Hills Country Club and golfed well into her 70’s. Myrt dearly loved all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and she and Dick attended as many swim meets, hockey games, ice skating competitions, basketball-baseball-softball-football-and lacrosse games, track meets, dance recitals, music concerts, and graduations as they could. And she had the photo albums to show for it! Myrt and Dick also loved to travel the USA, camping by tent and moving up to a permanent RV at the Lake Corpus Christi KOA when they became snowbirds. She is survived by brother, Jim of Elk Grove Village, Ill.; her daughters, Sherry Ruppelt of Cypress, Texas, Carolyn Napier and Bill Marthens of Rapids City, Ill., Cindy and Bryan Malcolm of Farmington, Minn., and Sandy and Greg Schnirring of Takoma Park, Md.; her grandchildren, Adrienne and Charlie West of Cloudcroft, N.M., Kirsten Santis of Houston, Texas, Chase Malcolm of Calgary, AB, Drew Malcolm and his fiancée Chelsea of Minneapolis, Minn., Quinn Malcolm of Farmington, Minn., and Amanda Schnirring and Brett Schnirring of Madison, Wis.; and great-grandchildren, Arthur and Bodhi West of Cloudcroft, N.M. She is preceded in death by her parents, Elim and Nellie Nickelson; her brothers, Elim, John, and Bob; and a baby sister, Elizabeth.
