The daughter of the late Edwin and Flossie (Saltmarsh) Waite, she was born in Millis, MA., June 13, 1927. She graduated from Millis High School. Before she was married, a couple of the places Myrtle had worked were the McGregor Instrument Company in Needham repointing hypodermic needles, and the Rust Craft Company in Dedham where she did hand-lettering and illustration for greeting cards. The job at Rust Craft was one that she enjoyed and she stated that it had been her favorite job. She had saved an album to show the work she had done there. In 1969, Myrtle was married in Millis, to her first husband Myron Fish of Colrain. They made their home in Colrain on Christian Hill where they enjoyed a view of the hills to the east and northeast to include a wonderful view of Mt. Monadnock. Mr. Fish died in 1971. She married her second husband, Edward Purington in 1974 and they continued to live on Christian Hill. It was a place that Myrtle really loved. Myrtle enjoyed oil painting and did many paintings of her beloved cats, landscapes, and points of interest. She traveled with her second husband, especially enjoying trips to Nashville to see Johnny Cash. Other than her first husband, Myrtle was predeceased by her husband Edward Purington in 2011, brother Kenneth Waite and sisters Carlene Perry and Flossie Johnson. She is survived by her step-children Betty Johnson and Susan Smith of Colrain; 5 step-grandchildren; 4 step-great-grandchildren and 1 step-great-great grandson; her brother Edwin Waite of West Roxbury and nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Colrain First Baptist Church in Colrain with Pastor James Rennie officiating. As yellow was Myrtle's favorite color, please wear something yellow if you can. Arrangements are under the direction of the Johnson Funeral Home, Shelburne Falls.
