Description	:	Myrtle Valeta Hoff was born on October 27, 1897, near Wauneta Nebraska to Elexis O and Mary May (Lantz) Hanna. She was the fourth child of 10 children. She was raised on a homestead about four miles northeast of Wauneta when she was a small girl. Myrtle attended the Shiloh grade school along with... Read More	Myrtle Valeta Hoff was born on October 27, 1897, near Wauneta Nebraska to Elexis O and Mary May (Lantz) Hanna. She was the fourth child of 10 children. She was raised on a homestead about four miles northeast of Wauneta when she was a small girl. Myrtle remembered watching her father plowing the sod and cutting it to be laid in an overlapping pattern to build their home (she also remembered that the home had muslin draped across the ceiling to keep dirt from falling in your food!) Myrtle attended the Shiloh grade school along with her brother and sisters until the eight grade. The school's placement was on a small plot of land that her father had contributed. She continued her education through high school, riding to school on horseback, and through training, earned a third grade teaching certificate. Myrtle went on to take college courses at Kearney, Nebraska. While in school, Myrtle had developed a close friendship with Vivian Hoff of Palisade Nebraska. On a visit to her home one time, she met Vivian's brother, Harry. A relationship developed. Myrtle married Harry Edward Hoff on June 25, 1919 and the couple settled near Wauneta, where daughter Edra "Eddie" was born. One year later the Hoff family would move to St. Francis Kansas where their son, Dwight, was born in 1925. The family would later move to Phillipsburg, Kansas where Harry served as a bookkeeper and Myrtle worked in the J.C. Penney Store. Opportunity brought them back to Wauneta in the 1930s and Myrtle returned to teaching. For a time, Myrtle taught at the Maddux School, then at the Zell School west of Wauneta, before returning to Shiloh for another two years. Myrtle decided to retire from teaching and began her second career of meeting people and assisting in the grocery stores owned by her son, Dwight. That career lasted for 32 years between helping in the Hoff grocery stores in Wauneta and Imperial Nebraska. She enjoyed church work, card parties, gardening, family activities and other interesting events in the Wauneta area. Myrtle passed away Wednesday, August 26 1998 at the Imperial manor Nursing Home. She was 100 years of age. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Harry in 1958; daughter Edra Mae Wilcox; granddaughter Susan Gill and great grandson, Matthew Gill. Survivors include son Dwight Hoff and wife Gladys of Imperial Nebraska; grandchildren Karl Hoff, Paul Hoff, Lynne Uhl, Rick Wilcox and Dennis Gill; great grandchildren Jolie Gill, Gennette Gill, Kelly Wilcox and Brandon Wilcox. Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 29 1998 at the United Methodist Church in Wauneta with Pastor Richard Brian and Rev. Murray Schmechel officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Lucille McBride, organist; and Mrs. Sharon Walgren, soloists. Pallbearers were Karl Hoff, Paul Hoff, Kurt Applegarth, Jack Fanning, Jack Maddux and David Uhl. Internment followed at the Riverside Cemetery, Wauneta Nebraska. A memorial was established to the United Methodist Church of Wauneta Nebraska. Liewer Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
