By Cath Glasgow https://www.familyfriendpoems.com Naaman suffered from various pains and complaints and, in 1927, after complaining about pains in his side, a Doctor who examined him removed his appendix without making any notice of his mental condition at the time. Then, in 1928, the same Doctor removed Naaman's tonsils in response to complaints of a sore throat. When these procedures failed to remedy his physical ailments and Naaman continued to complain of the same pains, the Doctor diagnosed his condition as an "unstable nervous system" and prescribed him a nerve tonic. In August 1931, in desperation, his family took Naaman to the Bridgwater Hospital, where the Doctor who examined him stated that, in his opinion, Naaman suffered from neurasthenia, which he described as a nervous disease characterised particularly by fatigue, along with "mental symptoms" and "psychic symptoms." He advised that Naaman's condition would only worsen without proper treatment. However, Naaman was released after a four day stay in the Hospital, and there was no further offer of referral or suggestion of any procedures that would provide proper treatment. In the country in the past, there have been those individuals in a family who could be described as "weak-minded," and whose families cared for them the best they could. If those individuals were not prone to violence, then the community was no worse off because of it. Unfortunately, it wasn't always obvious that someone was prone to violence until after the fact. Sadly, in this case, there came about a violent act and Naaman, for reasons inadequately explained, shot and killed his Uncle Lemuel Smith on December 14, 1931. Naaman then spent his remaining years in the Halifax County Hospital, where his general health improved; but, sadly, it was too late to prevent the lost life of Lemuel, and the grief and hardship suffered by Lemuel's family and the extended Smith family as a result of Naaman's actions. When I first met my Uncle Naaman, I was a young child and, as a child, I realized that he had done a bad thing and he had been sent away as punishment for being bad. I expected to meet a bad scary person, but when I first saw him, I realized that if he had been a scary person once, he was not scary anymore. He seemed unaware of the life he had taken, and of the hurt and grief he had caused in Nineveh while on the path that had led him to this place.
