Born at Hemford 84 years ago, she was the daughter of the late John and Amanda (Beck) Wagner. She leaves to mourn three sons and one daughter; Naaman, Cole Harbour; Maurine (Mrs. Earl Sarty), Midleton; Alonzo and Oren, Nineveh. Born at Hemford 84 years ago, she was the daughter of the late John and Amanda (Beck) Wagner. She leaves to mourn three sons and one daughter; Naaman, Cole Harbour; Maurine (Mrs. Earl Sarty), Midleton; Alonzo and Oren, Nineveh. A sister, Mrs. Ruby Veinot, Bridgewater; and a brother, Harvey Wagner, New Germany also survive. Also eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service was held on Monday, February 25th, at the Nineveh Hall with Rev. J. Maitland Jones of the New Canada Baptist Church officiating. The latter spoke words of comfort to the family reading from Paul's First Epistle to the Corinthians, Chapter 15, as well as reading a hymn written by the departed. The choir sang "Face to Face" and " The Old Rugged Cross" and the organist, Mrs. Harris Cook, New Canada, also played "The Sweet By and By. Pallbearers were Harold Barkhouse, Clayton Burgoyne, Burgess Crouse, and Guilford Veinot. Interment in the family cemetery at Nineveh." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Remembering "Grammie Gates" Naomi had two brothers and two sisters and she and her two sisters were all married on the same day, June 17, 1907. Naomi and her husband Gates lived on Johnson Road on the East side of Lohnes Lake where Gates built a sturdy farm house and barn set well back from the lake on the field among the apple trees overlooking the lake, the vegetable gardens and meadow where the straw and cranberries grew. Their only neighbour in sight was the Craswell Lohnes farm directly across the Lake where you get see the faint lamp lights on the hill in the evening or hear the echoing voices of the children at play in the lake or the farm fields during the day. Deer came out on the field to graze and it was not unusual for a Moose to wander through the meadow. Foxes made their dens on pine hill behind the swamp where the flag root grew and kept a close eye on the chicken coop. Blueberries grew in the lower pasture just down from the pine hill and bears were a pest to be contended with when berry picking. Naomi used the flag root to cure an upset stomach, a fever or ease the symptoms of the flu. She knew just how much you should take and mixed it with sugar in hot water or when that failed to cure the flu she added some rum, just a spoon full or two of rum depending on your condition. Rum was the only alcohol allowed in the house and it was strictly for medicinal purposes. It was a beautiful spot in the summer and a harsh winter environment. Naomi as a bride may have seemed petite or delicate for such an life but she bore the hardships of a farm life without complaint. Naomi had three sons and one daughter and she loved them all equally but there was a special bond between her and her daughter Maurine. She was so proud of Maurine who grew to be a kind and gentle woman with a pleasant personality and a pleasing laugh. After Maurine married she moved to the Valley and Naomi looked forward to her daughters regular visits' back home and a chance to see her darling granddaughter Sherilyn. Later when the Johnston Road became less traveled Naomi and Gates started to feel the isolation of living in the woods they moved up to the Nineveh Road on a small lot on the corner of the Silver Road. With a downsized garden and only a cow or two, a horse, a few chickens and the occasional pig or ducks life was much simpler. Their son Oren and his family took over the task of growing the families potatoes in the gardens at the old place. As they grew older Naomi could count on at least one visitor a day with their son Oren, daughter-in-law Evelyn and their five grandchildren just a stones throw across the road. Gates continued to work the farm and the woodland until he was eighty, until he was forced to stop work and take to his bed suffering the full effects of prostate cancer. Twenty five years earlier Naomi's Mother Amanda had moved in with Naomi and Gates when Amanda's health had deteriorated and Naomi had cared for her Mother until she passed away at home in bed with her loved ones at her side. Now Naomi with the help of her son Alonzo cared for Gates at home until his death just six months later in December 1960. In 1962 Alonzo married and he and Kathleen lived with Naomi who in her later years became quite frail and spent her days in her room writing Gospel hymns and enjoying the company of family and friends who dropped by to visit. Naomi left her hair long and when upbraided it fell well below her waist. When she left her hair down to proudly display the fullness of it you could glimpse once again in the smiling face the young delicate girl that Gates had fallen in love with, had loved and lived with through the good times and bad until his death in 1960 when his body was lain to rest to just a few hundred feet up the Silver Road right in behind the vegetable garden. Naomi was laid to rest just a little over fourteen years later and for many years Alonzo continued to plant the family vegetable garden just a few feet away from where his Mom and Dad lay until he too in turn was laid to rest in this same earth and now the field lies fallow.
