Nancy Markey was born in Maryland April 5 1821 and was married to Mr W H Wheeler in her native state December 22, 1846. Came to Iowa in 1855 and has resided the past thirty three years on the homestead where she died. Nancy Markey was born in Maryland April 5 1821 and was married to Mr W H Wheeler in her native state December 22, 1846. Came to Iowa in 1855 and has resided the past thirty three years on the homestead where she died. Here her family, consisting of nine children were reared and educated and received a mothers tender and loving care. Six sons and two daughters still survive her and will ever cherish her memory with most loving and tender regard. Coming to Iowa while it was almost a wilderness she has endured all the hardships incident to pioneer life and without murmur or complaint faithfully and patiently performed its labors and did her part in subduing the wilderness and erecting one of the pleasantest homes in Poweshiek county. A faithful wife and devoted mother her home has always been a model of neatness and comfort and her aged and loving husband now infirm and nearing the end of life's journey with her surviving children will remember sacrifices and devotion with feelings of most greatful remembrance. Words can not express or convey evan a faint outline of the poignant sorrow that this sad event brings to the hearts of the stricken husband and bereaved children. She was the guardian angel of a happly family over the threshold of whose home no sorrow ever passed until within the past few years when the death angel entered and claimed a lovely daughter and left a shadow on the mother's life that time could not efface. This sorrow continued constantly present with her and dimmed the joyful and cheerful current of her life. A mother's love followed her child to the silent resting place of the dead and an ever present memory of the loved one left its traces of sadness upon her buoyant spirits. Her work was well done and though her length of days seemed fully accomplished tears of sadness will course down the cheeks of many neighbors and friends who have known her nobility of soul shared her hospitality and received the blessings of her kindly deeds. She was universally beloved and esteemed for her countless virtues and the sympathy of this entire community is extended to her husband and children in their irreparable loss. She testified in her dying moments to the power of Christ to save and fell asleep in the blessed hope of the resurrection of the just. The funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev B F Shane of Victor on Tuesday forenoon June 12th and the remains tenderly and lovingly laid to rest beside her daughter in the Brooklyn Cemetery in presence of the large number of friends and relatives.
