On Saturday last, at about 3:30 o'clock p.m., Mrs. Nannie J. Barley, wife of A.M. Barley of this city, fell down the stairway in the residence, and broke her neck. Mrs. Allen Henry was visiting with her at the time, when Mrs. Barley excused herself for a few minutes to go to her room up-stairs, and was only gone a short time when Mrs. H. heard a lumbering sound, as if some one had fallen down the stairs, and called to Mrs. Barley, but receiving no answer she opened the door and saw the prostrate body of Mrs. Barley dead at the foot of the stairs. Mrs. Henry immediately did all she could to restore her friend to life, but she was gone. Dr. Jackson was summoned immediately, but found by examination that her neck was broken and that death was instantaneous. Mrs. Barley was born in Pittsylvania county, Virginia, May 25th, 1845. She was the daughter of Mr. Creed and Mrs. Elizabeth Ferguson, and the oldest of a family of seven children. She was married to A.M. Barley, in the home of her birth July 26th 1866. Together with her husband, she left her home in the latter part of 1869, and arrived in Cal. Jan 3rd 1870. She had been the mother of seven children. In her death she leaves a husband and four sons to mourn their loss. Mrs. Barley became a Christian under the ministry of Rev. Fleming of the M.E. church in Colusa Co about the year 1875 and joined the church but subsequently united with the Baptist church and has been of several years a member of the First Baptist church of Chico, loved by all. Mrs. Barley was a lady possessed of great amiability of disposition which enable her to fill with devotion every relation and sustain, as wife, mother, friend and Christian with such bravery of endurance, perseverance in duty, that she won the love of all who knew her, and a pang of regret fell upon the whole city and community at the sudden taking off of the excellent lady. ~~~ Chico Weekly Chronicle Record, Saturday, October 22, 1887, pg 1 col 6: Funeral of Mrs. Barley. The Baptist church was crowded to its utmost capacity yesterday afternoon by the friends and acquaintances of the late Mrs. Barley who wished to testify their esteem, and pay the last sad tribute of respect. Mrs. Wm. A. Reavis presided at the organ. The choir consisted of Mrs. Z.W. Burnham, Mrs. F.W. Walker, H. H. Camper and J.F. Taggart. After the rendering of some sweet and appropriate hymns, reading Scripture and prayer, Rev. J.E. Barnes delivered an earnest and eloquent sermon from the text Ps IXXIII, 22-26. A long train of carriage, forty in all, followed the remains to the cemetery. The sudden and tragic death of Mrs. Barley, and the peculiar sympathy of the situation, together with the high esteem in which she was held as a Christian lady awakened universal interest. The text used by Mr. Barnes was highly appropriate, especially the verse, "Thou shalt guide me with they counsel and afterward receive me to glory."
