He was mustered out on February 19, 1865. He was listed "absent without leave" February 19, 1865. Barley, a former prominent resident of Chico, was received here yesterday on the arrival of three of Barley's sons – George, Ernest and Harry Barley – In Chico. The body will arrive in Chico tonight, and funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning at the Baptist church, Rev. W.M. McCart officiating. Interment will be made in the family plot in Chico cemetery. Barley assisted in the building of the old Baptist church which stood on the site of the present telephone building. It was his wish that he be buried in Chico. Deceased was born in Missouri seventy-five years ago, January 1 last. He fought in the Civil War, and came to California from Virginia shortly after the war, settling in Colusa county. He came to Chico in 1879, and engaged in farming, stock raising and stock buying. He owned a ranch on the Shasta road ten miles north of Chico. He resided with his family at Third and Ivy streets, in what is now the S.S. Truitt home. In about 1888 his first wife fell down the stairs of her home, breaking her neck. Her injuries were fatal. He later married again. In 1890 Barley moved to San Francisco. Thirteen years ago he moved to Pasadena, where he resided until his death. Surviving are his widow and four sons, George Ernest and Harry Barley of San Francisco, and William Barley of Pasadena. One son, James, died about fifteen years ago. ~~~ Burial took place at Chico Cemetery on April 21, 1917, "age 75" in Sec 3, Lot 9B, 8, 1. ~~~ Chico Record, Sunday, April 22, 1917, pg 8 col 7: A.M. Barley Laid To Rest In Chico. Funeral services for A.M. Barley, who died Tuesday in Pasadena, were held yesterday at the Baptist church. Rev. W.M. McCart officiated, and interment was made in Chico cemetery. Barley was one of the heavy contributors to the fund for the establishment of the first Baptist church in Chico.
