Wheatley was born in Dorchester county, Maryland, July 3, 1830. She was married to Spencer Wheatley in 1894 [1848]. With several relatives and friends they moved their family to Henderson county, Illinois in 1860 and in 1868 settled on a farm in Neosho county, Kansas. Mr. Wheatley entered a part of the Osage Neutral Lands and before patent was issued by the government, died, Feb 2, 1872. The care of the large family of 9 children then fell to Mrs. Wheatley and with more than ordinary strength of mind coupled with the love of a mother she fought the wolf from the door, provided the best she could, gave her children all the advantages for an education that the times afforded and lived to see them all grown to manhood and womanhood. Eight of her children survive her: Mrs. M.A. Clover, J.J. Wheatley, Mrs. Ira Noyes and W.A. Wheatley of Chanute, Kansas; S.S. Wheatley of Carman, Ill.; Mrs. J.E. Hamlin of Rutledge, Mo.; I.B. Wheatley of Clinton, Mo., and G.W. Wheatley, Galena, Ks. All except Mrs. Hamlin were present at the funeral which took place at the Big Creek Chapel and was conducted by the pastor in charge, Rev.L.A. Rhorick. She also leaves 24 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren to mourn her death. She joined the M.E. Church at the age of 15 and lived a devoted and consistent Christian to the time of her death. She was put to rest in the Chapple cemetery by the side of her husband and daughter. With the short page of time has been finished and the great scroll of eternity has begun to unfurl. "The Lord gaveth and the Lord taketh away. Blessed be the Name of the Lord."
