"The first of November, 1883, the Colonel loaded his family into two covered wagons in the vicinity of Ottumwa and started for Audubon County. The 180 mile journey took nine days. The cattle and horses were driven through. They were driven down what is now Grand Avenue in Des Moines. Despite the fact that the trip was made in chilly November, members of the party slept out in the open, with the exception of one night spent I. Guthrie Center. Members of the party were: Mr. and Mrs. White, James G., Mattie, Herbert, Charles, Samuel, John, Alpha, and Esther. Tom was not born until later. Some of the children of the First family later came to Audubon County. The Whites were Methodists. In 1892, along with the R.H. Garnett family, David Sheets, and the Rice families they were instrumental in organizing a class of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Sunnyside School, located on the Robert Garnett family in Greeley Township.
