Just how the accident happened is not known, but when found by her son, she was fearfully burned. The fire did little damage to the house. Mrs. Whitney is an old resident of Massena, being nearly 87 years of age and a resident of the town for the past 19 years. A few years ago she lost her mind and became quite childish and since that time her only son, W. S. Whitney, who is a business man in Massena, has been staying with her. Yesterday he left the house for a few minutes to go to his own home a short distance away. When he left everything was all right in the house. After having been gone less than a quarter hour, he returned and found the house full of smoke. He hurried at once to where his mother had been and found her body lying in the room. He carried her out the back door when he became overcome with the smoke and had to get to the open air. Running across the street to the home of Bert Hill, he gave the alarm. Mr. Hill went to the back door and found the lifeless body of Mrs. Whitney terribly burned. While he took care of the body, others who were attracted to the scene, turned their effort to extinguish the flames in the house. This was done in a short time, and little damage was done to the home. Two small holes were burned in the floor, one rocking chair scorched a little and another chair burned. Just how the accident happened is not known, but it is thought that Mrs. Whitney went to the stove while her son was gone and attempted to stir the fire, which was not very bright when he left and got her clothes afire in the coals. Whether she was suffocated or inhaled the flames from her burning clothes is also in doubt, but at her age, the burns she received would have been enough to have caused her death. Mrs. Whitney is related to the Whitneys of Atlantic and took a prominent part in the building up of Cass county. The funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
