Description	:	William, son of Eseck and Nancy (Barber) Whitney, was born September 27, 1845, at Pineville, New York, Oswego County. In 1855, William came with his parents to Adair County in Iowa. On September 1, 1857, he came to Cass County. William attended school in Lewis during the winter months. Harriet, daughter of Marvin and Charlotte Strong, was born in Detour, Illinois, on February 27, 1853. Harriet and William were married at Whitneyville, February 27, 1871. On September 1, 1857, he came to Cass County. William attended school in Lewis during the winter months. Harriet, daughter of Marvin and Charlotte Strong, was born in Detour, Illinois, on February 27, 1853. Harriet and William were married at Whitneyville, February 27, 1871. Harriet was employed at Whitneyville prior to her marriage. A four-room house was built for the newlyweds; in 1884 it was moved to Massena and is located at the corner of 4th and Main. William Whitney and Alvin Black operated a mercantile store in the first years of Massena; after a few years William purchased Alvin's share. In 1905 the store was destroyed by fire. William and Alvin rebuilt brick buildings, leasing many buildings but keeping two side by side that were leased to the Slocum Company. The Whitney building remained in the Whitney family until 1966. William was a stockholder in the Massena Savings Bank; after it failed the Farmers Savings Bank moved to this location, now the site of the Union National Bank. The Whitneys sold the farm to John Ortgies, Sr. in 1912. William carried chain to plat farms and towns, helping form the first schools, churches, and businesses, seeing a wilderness grow into fertile farms and towns of happy, wealthy people. Living near the Pottawattamie Indians and having them for friends, William knew future generations would not be able to comprehend the difference between then and now. He was happy to have lived to see his dreams fulfilled. Mr. Whitney retired in 1906, living in Massena until his death on January 19, 1924. Harriet died March 13, 1938. They were parents of six children; all attended Massena High School and lived in Massena. Nina married Clarence Smeltzer. Vira married John Lee. Leon married Prudence Shaver. Loyd married Libbie French. Etta married Ulysses Selee. Meda never married.
