The Evening Index (San Bernardino, CA.), P. 6, Col. 2 Mon., Jun. 7, 1909 NATHAN HENRY BARTON Death came this morning to Nathan Henry Barton after a severe attack of typhoid pneumonia. Mr. Barton formerly lived for a great many years in this city,, but for some time has been living in East Colton. He was one of the old war veterans, having served with the Union army throughout the civil war, gaining no little distinction as a soldier. He was born in Hancock county, Illinois, in 1840, thus being 69 years of age. Together with his wife, he came to California 23 years ago, having then given up his profession, which was that of druggist, on account of his health demanding an outdoor life. He was one of the most prominent members of the Grand Army, and at the time of his death was commander of the local post. Besides a wife, he leaves four children - Wallace M. Barton, Mrs. Maud Parsons, Mrs. Myra A. Allen and Mrs. Myrtle G. Pitcher, all of this city, and Mrs. Grace Edginton on Morro, Cal. The funeral will take place at 3:30 tomorrow afternoon from the undertaking parlors of the J. D. McDonald company. Rev. Shaw officiating. The pallbearers have not yet been selected, but will consist of three members of the Grand Army and three from the local Masonic lodges. The members of the Grand Army and of the pioneer's society will attend in a body, and at the grave the ritualistic service of the Grand Army will be carried out. San Bernardino Daily Sun (San Bernardino, CA.), P. 5, Col. 3 Tue., Jun. 8, 1909 NATHAN HENRY BARTON (excerpt) Nathan Henry Barton passed away early yesterday morning after a short illness with typhoid pneumonia. For 23 years the former soldier and pioneer made his home in this vicinity, moving here on coming to California from Illinois, where he was born in Hancock county, in 1840. He was in the sixty-ninth year of his life when death called at his door. When the Civil war broke out Mr. Barton joined the army and served with distinction, fighting for his country. Although a druggist the former veteran gave up his profession some years ago on account of his poor health and since that time has been seeking outdoor life. He was always prominent in Grand Army circles and with ever the thoughts of the bloody conflicts, in which he and his comrades fought, fresh in his mind and with fire in his eyes he often told stirring tales of the war to the younger generation. The welfare of the other members of the post was his topic of interest and in recognition of the noble manner in which he worked in his declining years for the good of the G. A. R. upon him was conferred the high honor of commander of his local comrades.
