He passed away on Wednesday, May 16, 2007, in Colorado Springs, Colo. The youngest of five children, his parents, his brothers, Phares and Levi, and his half-sisters, Ethel and Pearl, have preceded him in death. He had fond memories of a boyhood spent swimming and boating in the Frenchman River, playing the piano, reading and dreaming of far away places. He loved gardening with his mother and his favorite flower was the snapdragon. During high school he spent happy hours landscaping the yard at Willow Bend. He also grew garden vegetables and raised rabbits which were sold to others. He graduated with the Class of 1932. From the time he was a child he loved the arts, but he was an adult before he saw his first art museum. His family gave him a miniature theater set which inspired him to be an artist. He enjoyed writing plays, making puppets and designing little theater sets. He always knew he was going to be an artist. He attended and graduated from the Chicago Art Institute in 1939. After a brief career as a commercial artist in Chicago he returned to Nebraska where he was Staff Artist and Exhibits Designer for the University of Nebraska State Museum at Morrill Hall in Lincoln, Neb. From the end of World War II to 1984 he continued in his work at the University of Nebraska. The work that still bears his name as Exhibits Designer are the extensive habitat displays of Nebraska wildlife in Morrill Hall. He designed the museum's first wildlife exhibit in 1947. Nathan was especially proud of this bobcat display not only because it was his first habitat display, but also because no one knew for sure how it would turn out. To prepare for the habitat displays he researched and sketched animals in nature. He was also involved in exhibit work when the Trailside Museum opened at Fort Robinson, Nebraska in the mid-1960s. In private he painted in oil, watercolor, pen and ink and acrylic, producing both realistic and abstract works. The subject matter of his art consists of landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and modern abstract paintings and sculptures. His diversity of styles showed what a talented artist he was. He had numerous one man shows in Nebraska. Nathan wanted people to enjoy his work as much as he enjoyed creating it. He travelled to Europe several times where his favorite city was Paris and his favorite pasttime was enjoying the museums. He was interested in Asian cultures, befriended foreign students and studied foreign languages. Nathan was a long time member of the Unitarian Church and supported various social justice concerns. Although he never married he was a loving and involved uncle to his nephew, Robert Mohler, of Ord, Neb., and his four nieces, Lois Okrasinksi, Portland, Ore., Jean Anderson, Centennial, Colo., Laurel Dunn and Ann Mohler, both of Colorado Springs, Colo., who survive him. Inurnment will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Wauneta, Neb., on Tuesday, June 12, at 10:30 a.m. Memorials can be sent to the University of Nebraska State Museum, Morrill Hall, 14th and U Streets, Lincoln, Neb. 68588 or the Unitarian Church, 6300 A.
