Pittsfield: Sergeant First Class Nathan W. Haynes 64, retired, died Nov. 1, 2013 at a Bangor Hospital following a long battle with cancer. He was born in Hartland, ME Oct. 12, 1949 the son of Russell H and Dorothy (Kirby) Haynes. He was a graduate of Maine Central Institute class of 1968. He graduated from Gorham State Teachers College with a bachelor's degree, in the class of 1972. He continued his education at Gorham working on a Masters Degree until he joined the U.S. Army on Nov. 03, 1974 retiring as Sergeant First Class on Nov. 30, 1994. Sgt. Haynes participated in both Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He married Cheryl Grover in Detroit on July 24, 1999. After his retirement he worked for Vic Firth Manufacturing in Newport for 10 years and he also worked at Walpole until his retirement in 2011. Nathan loved watching the History Channel and especially loved Military History shows. He loved woodworking, antiquing with his wife Cheryl, going to dances, and his favorite thing to do was to play penny poker with his family. He is survived by his wife Cheryl A. Haynes of Pittsfield, one son James Cowan of Palmyra, one daughter and her husband Jennifer and Allen Brawn of Canaan, one brother Michael P. Haynes and his significant other Lauri Dostie of Canaan, two sisters and their husbands, Sylvia and Richard Thurlow of Detroit, Tammie and Mark Howland of Detroit, two grandchildren, Hannah and Michael Pelletier of Canaan, a sister-in-law Lillian Haynes of Pittsfield, his aunt Helen Haynes of Pittsfield, his mother-in-law Betty Grover of Milbridge, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He will also be remembered by Cheryl's brothers and sisters and their families. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Rusty Hayes. Graveside services with military honors will be conducted at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery 163 Mt Vernon Road, Augusta, ME. (Brown Funeral Home)
