In 1741 Silas Walker deeded Lot # 2 on the east side of the street to,Nathaniel Sanderson and Lot # 26 on the west side of the street to Nathaniel's bother,David Sanderson.Their Lots were at the top of Mann Hill in what was then "Nichewaug".Petersham was not incorporated as a town until 1754.Mann Hill was two miles north of the village center,at the end of "Petersham Street" (Now North Main Street/ Rt 31),named for, William Mann who's house in the 1870's was just north of the former Sanderson property.(see posted map marked: W. Mann)Nathaniel Sanderson's house and property was known as "The Wayside Farm" The posted circa 1860's photo of, Nathaniel Sanderson's "Wayside Farm House" was taken from "The History of Petersham Massachusetts" by Mable Cook Coolidge pg 164,1948.The original house,pictured here,survived until 1868 when it was razed by the Wilder family who owned the property in that year. After Nathaniel's death in 1774 "The Wayside Farm" passed though several owners leading up to modern times.First it passed to,Jesse Goodnow and then to, Aaron Brooks.In 1793 it was purchased by ,Rev Joseph Farrar Sr.It then went to his son, Joseph Farrar Jr (1780-1870),who ran it until his daughter, Anna Farrar (1816-1912) married,Lysander Wilder in 1839.The Wilder family would run it as "The Wayside Dairy Farm" .It remained in the Wilder family for several generations..Anna and Lysander Wilder's son, Charles Kirk Wilder (1841-1923) and his family were the owner's in 1870 when the posted property owners map was published.Charles Kirk Wilder's name has been superimposed over;on posted map with,Nathaniel Sanderson Lot #2.At the time of the 1948 publishing of the ,Mable Cook Coolidge history the old cellar hole of,Nathaniel Sanderson's house was still visible on the property of,George Kirk Wilder,son of,Charles Kirk Wilder.The Wilder House that replaced,Nathaniel Sanderson's original "Wayside Farm House" can be seen on,George Kirk Wilder's Find A Grave memorial.
